wow. the pope and terri shiavo go in the same day. i can't believe those two people were just in the same sentence together. *sigh* no comment. there's been enough already.

correction... he was given his last rites, but the pope is not deceased. jumped the gun a little... sorry.

and lily's off. to be spayed that is. cross your fingers that everything goes well, and that she'll be back to her crazy self in no time. :) i get to pick her up after 5 today... then she'll be recovering the rest of the night. poor girl. but it had to be done. today is starting off a little crazy... dropping off lily, and then getting all the way to work and realizing i forgot my id badge. doh. so i had to drive all the way back home. *sigh* let's hope the rest of today looks better...

got my official running time from the race website... i did better than i thought at the 10k! i made it in 58:52 (so only better by two minutes) and my pace was 9:49 (instead of the 10:00 i thought previously) :) so not too bad! i went running last night for an hour and it felt great. so hopefully i'll be even better at the 10k on the 17th... we'll see :)

just finished watching the documentary "supersize me"... good stuff. made me a little naseaus... but still worth watching. fun fact: detroit is the #1 fattest city. doesn't surprise me in the least. anyway... that's a whole nother rant... i'll save that for another day. but if you haven't seen it, i'd rent it :)

i have an easy week this week... no meetings, no plans... just the games on saturday with some friends. lily has spay surgery tomorrow, so it's good that i can focus on that. i'm taking her recovery time hiatus from the dog park as a time to really concentrate on her jumping. i need to find people willing to approach her, so that i can train her to 'sit' instead of mauling them. at the dog park, she's too far away from me to restrain her before she jumps, and people just give her attention when she does... so it totally ruins any progress i make. so we'll take a break for a couple weeks... then when she's back to normal, we'll go in small increments, when not a lot of people are there. i took her running with me yesterday. now that it's getting nicer outside, i can take her more often, and really get her exercised. she's much better on leash if i'm moving quickly... she doesn't pull, and just trots happily beside me :) some weekend i'll find a trail or two to take her on... eventually when it gets hot, i'll find a lake or a spot along the ocean to take her... i can't wait :)

training is going well... i'm going for a 6.5 mile run tonight, since it's beautiful outside, and it's supposed to rain tomorrow. i re-instated my fitness blog, so that i can now log how many miles a week i'm running. i haven't been keeping track, and i have a feeling i may not be as ready as i think i am for the 10 miler in june, if i don't start getting more serious about it. nothing crazy... i'm just going to alternate hard/easy running days... running 3 days, then resting, running 2 days, then resting. and on the easy days, i may just do some cross training or strength training... we'll see. i got a tip from a friend of mine that i shouldn't aim to keep increasing my miles each time... that alternating small with long runs will help in the long run. as long as one run each week i make a big one, i'll be good :) i'm on week two of the twelve weeks before i begin marathon training. registration begins on april 6th for the marine corps marathon... i just want to make sure i'm ready to start training, before i commit to this!

and for those of you that were keeping up with me lately... my friend that i was spending quality time with and i have mutually agreed that we will remain friends. which is good... i probably need some good 'me' time for a while. give me some time to settle into dc... i've been here for four and a half months now... but that's not all that long. i still have trouble finding my way around downtown... still not sure where nw becomes ne or sw. i do however, have the metro system down pat. i can also find a lot of things in my neighborhood... i'm getting a lot better with streets that have the same name, but don't connect. but i still have much to learn... many bars, restaurants, theaters, museums, and memorials to visit. i have a favorite thai restaurant... and so far, i think my favorite bar is a toss between "sign of the whale" and "hawk and dove". both always play music that i like, and leave room to shake my booty :) i have yet to visit a dance club that i like... but the word on the street is i would really love "fur"... so i plan on checking that place out soon.

ok, back to work i go...

good weekend, but i got a call sunday evening telling me my flight was cancelled for monday morning. doh. luckily, i have good friends, and steph managed to find time this morning to check on lily, so that i didn't have to freak out about her not being able to get outside. so i spent some long hours at the airport... i was supposed to be back by 9:30, and instead made it home by 4. but i had a good weekend... it's back to normal tomorrow.

i also had a GREAT time watching state win on friday and sunday!! i met my fellow msu friends out on friday night, and cheered on with the rest of the bar when state came out a winner! then i joined my family for easter dinner huddled around our t.v. to watch them win AGAIN in double overtime! what a great game!! and kudos to my family for joining me on cheering them on :) this saturday will be another great game, even if we don't win. woohoo, spartans!! i plan on partying hard on monday for the final game... i can't believe march is over already. *sigh* but springtime is finally here... gotta love that :)

ever had a day where you are not in a good mood, but not really for any particular reason? or is that a girls-are-just-moody type of thing? it doesn't happen often... but once in a while, i get a day where i just feel down. maybe it's the weather... it's pretty dreary outside. it's not an angry "leave me the hell alone" type of feeling... just a melancholy mood... nothing a good beer and some good company wouldn't fix. good thing i'm going out tonight to watch the state game. could be just what the doctor ordered, regardless if we win :)

tomorrow morning i fly home, and i'll be back monday morning, bright and early. woohoo for four day work weeks, and good thing today is friday :)

man... i've been so wiped out after work lately... i haven't had the motivation or the energy to go running. so yesterday i resloved myself to take a nap, only if i made myself get up early, to run in the morning. so 5am rolled around, and i put on my shoes... and ran four miles. nothing crazy, just a standard run. but i love getting it over with in the morning... but only if i've had a good night's sleep the night before. so now i've got my running in for the day, and i can rest easy, and not be stressed after work tonight. i'm meeting friends up for a happy hour, and then i may follow them to watch some basketball :) msu plays tomorrow, and i plan on going out to watch them play... then saturday morning, i'm all set to fly to michigan for the weekend. maybe get some running in on saturday morning... who knows. i'll try... i need to train for the 10k in two weeks! i am trying to beat my time from last time... don't know if i can, but i can try :) i need to get some running pants/shorts... the only sweatpants i currently own are made of fleece... the worst thing i could wear in a race. so i might travel over to target and see if they have any sport pants/shorts that would be suitable. lily's also taken to eating holes in most of my socks... so i need to restock my supply of those. apparently cotton must be pretty fun to chew right out of the hamper. ew. *sigh* she goes in to get spayed on thursday... hopefully trying to keep her calm for a week or two while she heals won't prove to be too difficult. she's also getting microchipped, finally :) then that's it for a while. i'm still monitoring her for her recurrent infections... she hasn't had any in a while... so we may be in the clear for needing any further surgeries! woohoo! i'm not holding my breath... but the signs are looking good so far! and for my champaign friends... i'm cheering for illinois tonight! :)

hilarious... i just asked jackie about this last week, when i was making a purchase at best buy, and i mangled my signature when i was checking out. who really checks signatures, and why the hell do we even sign anything anymore? then i read fark today, and they linked to a guy who did a credit card experiment to test the process... it's great! had me crackin up today :)

so i've found my next couple of races. there is a 10k on april 17th, for sallie mae. it's downtown, only this time it runs along the potomac... which might be fun :) only, that's the weekend i'm having a visitor... but the race is at 8am, so maybe i could convince them to sleep in that sunday morning and meet up afterwards? we'll see. but after that, there is the 10-mile trail running race in virginia, on june 5th. i'm planning on doing that one, and foregoing the trip to tennessee for a wedding. the plans for attending the wedding are becoming difficult, since my family is flying in from michigan, and i'd have to coordinate meeting them in tennessee. drama. so we'll see. those are the two i'd like to run... but we'll see how it goes. marathon training starts in july... i'm saving up for new shoes to train in. stephanie gave me a great idea... in that if i get fitted for some new shoes, to buy two pair (one from a not-so-expensive running store), and then alternate them, so that i don't wear them out before the marathon :) so i need to afford two pairs... the ones i have are on their last leg.

monday is pretty slow for me today... i'm feeling drained from this weekend, even though i didn't really do much. i feel like i could still use another couple of days :) this weekend will be fun to go home... short, but good :) plus it makes next week a four day work week... gotta love that ;)

so my brackets are not doing so hot. two of my teams i had in the final four are gone. already. doh. but the two i still have, are in the final game (unc and illinois) so i still have a decent chance if those two make it. but oh well. michigan state did better than i anticipated. so go state :) i'm sitting at home, doing laundry, eating pizza, and watching basketball. what a great sunday :) it's raining, so i don't feel so bad about spending the day inside. this week is pretty slow... no meetings or big events. i'm flying to michigan on saturday... should be a fun weekend :) until then, it's just running and taking lily to the park. hopefully it might be warm enough to take her running with me... i always love getting her exercised, too! sure beats rubbing off dirt and woodchips she manages to get into from playing with other dogs ;)

man this week was busy. i had something going on every night, from meetings to bars to technical support... it was great! i love a full schedule... i get so much more done when i have a lot to do. if i'm left with free time, i rarely spend it wisely. but this week is winding down. nothing crazy tonight... goin to dinner and catching 'the ring: 2' at the theater. the first ring movie creeped me the hell out. it's the only scary movie that really literally gave me nightmares. that little girl followed me into my sleep... and was one of the few times i actually woke up with a terrified feeling. so that will be fun ;) might go out tomorrow night, but so far, my plans are tentative. laundry, cleaning, and basketball at the very least, so that sunday i can sit back and just relax without feeling guilty. i have a lot on my plate right now... i keep volunteering to do all these tasks... i think i need to write down my deadlines and projects so that i don't overextend myself. or at least, so i don't forget something :)

anyway, i'll be in michigan for easter next weekend. a short visit, i'm arriving saturday morning, and leaving monday morning. only two days to visit with friends and family. i may try to kill two birds with one stone, and make my friends visit me at my family's house... especially considering i will have no transportation. but we'll see. not too many friends left still in michigan, so it won't be some throwdown party... but maybe we can all go out to eat or something. it's a week away, i'll figure it out.

in the meantime, msu plays tonight around 9:30ish... i only have them going past the first round... not very confident in my team this year. but maybe they'll surprise me... go state! :)

eireann go brach! (ireland forever!) i love this holiday. nothing like gathering around with friends at a fun pub to drink and be merry, and talk with ridiculous irish accents that probably offend every irish person i've ever known. but still fun, all the same :) i'm only 1/4 irish (grandmother's last name is kelly)... but it shows in my freckles! :) i even heard the unicorn song this morning on the radio... great stuff. i'll be down at finn mccool's on 8th street tonight if anyone cares to join me! beer and ncaa tournament games. life is good :)

maybe they should start playing those commercials again. you remember... "you can do your hair... *flash to 12 yr old girl with crimped hair and a side ponytail*... and you can do your eyes *show girl putting on bright blue eyeshadow*... but when you smoke, you can't do a thing with your mouth. *show girl opening her mouth and showing her mouth full of cigarette butts*. smoking stinks, yuck!"

quality commercials :) but seriously, i drove into work today to a kid who looked no older than 10, furiously smoking a cigarette before getting onto the bus. he could not have been older than middle school. all the other kids looked about 8 or 9... my jaw just dropped. that is the youngest i have ever seen someone smoke. it made me so sad. how the hell he got the cigarettes... i don't know... but i can't imagine being in 6th grade and already addicted to nicotine. *sigh* as if that kid didn't have enough problems... he hasn't even hit high school yet, and he'll already be getting a smoker's cough. crazy.

but on the brighter side of things, i had a good neighborhood meeting last night. i'm really enjoying getting involved in all the groups around here. makes me wish i could afford to buy in my current neighborhood. but we had a real estate agent do a presentation last night... and the average home sold in my neighborhood averages about 600,000. yep. ridiculously out of my range as a single person with no current assets other than my used car. supposedly there are places that do exist that are around the 450,000 price range... but holy crap. those houses are about the size of the house i grew up in, but about 3-4 times as expensive. welcome to dc real estate, i know :) i expect to purchase a place within the next 2-3 years. depending on how the market goes... i'd like to try and stay in arlington. i really like this area... but i've only been here for four months, so who knows. my opinion may change. condos are insanely popular to buy right now... but those often have restrictions on pets... they don't usually allow 70lb labradors. so we'll see... we'll see. in the meantime, i'm staying involved in all the little groups, to get a feel for how things work in this county. and it all started for a little dog park. go figure ;)

man i'm exhausted. i haven't been sleeping well lately. i even woke up several times the night before the race, and i was worried the lack of sleep was going to hurt my time. the past couple of nights it's been rough... not sure what the deal is. regardless, i'm exhausted, and need to get some coffee asap. *yawn* i need a nap...

so yesterday's race was a blast. i had such a great time. i came in just over an hour... i think my time was like 1:00:06 or something like that.... so about a 10:00 mile... pretty average, but good for me :) so now i just have to work on improving that time. i'm not that sore today, and i'm looking forward to doing another one soon! i'm addicted! the course was so fun... it was a gorgeous day... a little cold, but it felt great once we got started. the course had us running so that the capitol building was right in front of us, then we ran around, and i could see the washington monument... not every day you can look over and see a national icon to your right :) it was fantastic! once i got home, i took a nice nap, and then wandered over to a friend's house, where we watched the basketball games. we then migrated over to a st. patrick's day party (a little early, but still fun)... hence me tasting the green beer in the photo ;) yesterday was a great day :)

today i get to look forward to more fun... we are having a st. patrick's day potluck at the dog park, and i'll be sure to bring my camera this time! lily always looks so cute in her little bandanas... i believe i have a st. patrick's day one lying around here somewhere. if not, i definitely have a michigan state one she can sport around. i just hope it doesn't snow! oh well... lots of fun this week. meetings, and st. patrick's day on thursday, as well as the beginning of the tournament. woohoo... good week ahead!

a week from monday is the first day of spring. man, i can't freakin wait. i went downtown to pick up my race packet this morning, and there were some really pretty pansies (i think) that had been planted already... the sun was shining... it put me in a great mood, and made me yearn for warmer weather to get here ASAP. at least it looks like spring, even if it doesn't quite feel like it yet :) i'll take what i can get!

tonight i am meeting up with some friends from my first job out here for a happy hour... then resting up for tomorrow. it's gonna be a long day... first the race at the butt crack of dawn, then it's tournament time! :) i love march madness... i plan on watching games tomorrow, and then on st. patrick's day hopefully finding a good sports pub to celebrate irish style! time to gather up my friends and actually celebrate the holiday this year... unlike the past couple of years, where it's been me and either myself, or some poor sap i convinced to sit with me for a drink or two :) with the plethera of irish pubs in the area... i have no doubts about finding a good time. most likely it will be finn mccools on 8th st in SE... if you live in dc and haven't checked it out yet, i highly recommend it. :) that 1/4 bit of irish in me loves good green beer... and a good bagpipe rendition of 'amazing grace' ;) (sorry... those that have heard my mp3 collection will understand) i'll bust out the camera phone to capture some guaranteed good holiday fun :)

halfway through running this morning... my mp3 player died. it's not the battery. it just died. i've had it for about 3 years now... at 64mb and $80, it was perfect for running when i only ran for 20-30 minutes at a time. but i could only get about 10-12 songs on there... and it only gave me about 45 minutes of playing time before the songs started to repeat. so i guess it's a good thing it died, now that there are much better, higher storage mp3 players out there. especially since i'm up to running for 50-60 minutes at a time. i'd love an ipod... and their smallest one, the ipod shuffle is perfect. but $150 bucks is out of my price range at the moment... *sigh*. anyone have a spare one lying around? ;) i'm gonna try and save to get one for when i train to run the marathon... i'm going to need every ounce of motivation to get me through that race that i can get... and music really, really gets me going :) it could be my reward to myself for keeping at my goal weight for TWO YEARS :) yep, it's been two years since i reached my goal, and made lifetime at weight watchers. woohoo... looks like the thin me is here to stay :) now the thin me just wants an ipod ;)

so i ran on sunday... felt great. had a long meeting monday, and cleaned the apartment some, so no working out that night. last night i was supposed to run, but when i got in the room at 7:30, everything was in use! must be the cold weather driving everyone indoors... there is usually only one other person in there working out that late. so i went to bed early and got up at 5 and ran my 50 minutes this morning. it felt good... but now i'm not sure when i should have my last run before the race. i guess by tomorrow night, since i ran so early this morning, i should be ready again... and hopefully a day and a half is enough time to recover before the race on saturday morning. worse comes to worst, i strain myself, and have to wait a week or so. but i think i'll be fine. not like i'm running a half marathon... it's only a 10k. :)

anyway, no word yet on how the dog park meeting went last night. i've also got no plans for saturday night... so i'm going to have to work on that. there's a couple of places i'd like to check out, so time to find some friends who don't already have plans :) this sunday we are having a st. patrick's day party at the dog park... complete with a dog-safe cake made by a local bakery that specializes in dog cakes/treats. Yes, there is a bakery that makes items that are safe for dogs to eat. hilarious. i love it :) lily is getting a belated birthday cake from there... i'll be sure to take photos of her in all her glory :) good lord, what have i become... ;)

here i am! it's official, i'm listed as #4246 for the 10k saturday morning :) come out and cheer us on, if you're in the area! if they post photos online, i'll be sure to pass it along :) i also found more 10k and 5k races to run through june... then july starts the training for the marathon. there's a half marathon mid-august... might try and run it for the hell of it. depends on how far i get in my training by that point. might just be wishful thinking :) anyway, i loved running the 5k race for the cure in detroit... so i'm really looking forward to this 10k. let's just hope i don't embarrass myself with my finishing time... that's my next goal... working on my race times. for now, i'm in it just for fun. and what fun it is!

i have discovered the heaven that is baja fresh :) i got their fajita burrito... holy cow is it GOOD! :) that and their veggie quesadillas... mmmm... i could eat this every day. so that just made my lunch :) i've been busy, and not been able to go home to let lily out at noon... but it's only temporary. hopefully tomorrow i can take a break and go back to eating lunch at home. otherwise, baja may be seeing me again very soon ;)

ok, i give up. the weather guy sucks. i read that it was supposed to be rainy and cold this weekend... and it was freakin near 50 and sunny! it would have been the perfect weather to meet a friend with his dog for a playdate at the park... but i made plans for the spy museum instead. go figure. i no longer trust the weatherman. but it's supposed to be really cold again this week... i just hope it warms up a little before the race on saturday! i went running tonight... man my calves are sore. it will be interesting to see how the rest of the week goes.

anyway, the spy museum on saturday was great! it was long, and there was a ton of information to absorb... but well worth it. i also went to their special exhibit about the history of terrorism in the country. very powerful. especially the exhibits on the kkk. basically, ignorant people suck. i cannot imagine hating anything so fiercely... or so violently. it was also interesting to hear about how the intelligence community does profiling... but that they are worried about that method, since it invokes hatred and fear of a general profile, rather than focusing on individuals. very interesting. profiling can be helpful... but i can definitely see how it creates problems. so overall, it was a great place to go. if you're in the area and haven't gone, i'd highly recommend it :)

so other than the race, not much planned for the rest of the week. we have an important meeting on tuesday for the dog park... basically determining if we get lights and access like we've been fighting for. so cross your fingers for us... we need this to go well! we are meeting on monday to go over our preparations... i think we will have no problems though... we are well prepared for our side :)

well, for those of you that didn't know, jackie (formerly rabaut, now sommerville) is pregnant... and today they found out for sure what she was having... a girl! so congrats jackie and craig! i thought for sure it was a boy... good thing it's not my kid ;) she's due in august... already at 18 weeks, she's halfway there! :) it's time like these i wish i still lived in michigan, closer to family and friends... but hopefully i will still get to spend some quality time, and keep up with the new little sommerville ;)

man, i'm still waiting for my morning coffee to kick in. finally got to work at a decent time this morning. i usually try to get into work between 7 and 7:30... but the past couple of days it started to creep around 8... oops. today's friday... nothing big planned for tonight, which is good. i could use the money ;) i have my first visitor coming out to see me in mid-april... should be a fun weekend. i'm also going home in about 3 weeks, for easter weekend. i'll be home saturday morning to monday morning. so not much of a trip, but i'll get to see some friends and my family that i haven't seen since january. then i'm going back again in may for my cousin's wedding reception, and then i may possibly have a trip to plan in june, for a friend's wedding in tennessee. that's still up in the air though... i've got a couple months to plan for it :) next weekend is the 10k for st. patrick's day... i'm going running tonight, and again on sunday-tuesday-thursday. in between, i may do a *little* workout... i really need to start getting back into lifting again. running does not make me a strong girl :) but i have to run those days, or i will be dead for that race. even though it is only a 10k... i usually don't run more than 5 and a half miles at a time. so it will be a challenge... but my adrenaline should help move my feet those extra yards :)

anyway, happy friday everyone :) and jason, did you make it into work at 6? ;)

so i've had a pretty fun past week or so :) i've managed to buy a good steam cleaner, and now my carpets look half way decent again. never thought i'd see the day when steam cleaners would excite me. work is going really well... i'm pretty busy most days, and i'm liking the work that i'm doing. the dog park group has kept me pretty busy as well, with meetings, planning, etc. i've also been to a few new bars, and met some fun, new people :) i heard about a st. patrick's day race downtown, so i registered to run the 10k next weekend, on the 12th. i've been trying to get back in my running routine, and i'm doing a pretty good job. i should be able to finish without a problem. i remember the days jackie and i trained for a 5k, and thought i was going to die by the time it was done. now i am on the lookout for a half-marathon to run this summer... that will definitely help prepare me for the marathon in october.

other than that, i look forward to spending time this weekend at the spy museum... i met someone that i've been spending some quality time with lately, and we had planned to go at some point in time. might as well go while it's freezing outside!

as for lily, she's still doing great. she is no longer in heat (thank god)... and we are working on her training. she is very, VERY bad at jumping up, stealing food, and barking at the cat, nonstop. so a friend of mine lent me a squirt bottle... it's done wonders for the jumping (on me, at least), and the stealing food. but that only works while i'm standing around. she is still AWFUL at stealing items off the counter, if i'm not standing near her. she ate my glasses a couple days ago... so i had to dig out my old pair until i can find time to go get new glasses :( so i looked into a barking collar... and found a citronella one at petsmart last night. we tried it out, and it was the quietest evening i've had in a long while! it's great! i'm working on associating her being 'sprayed' with the word 'quiet'... so hopefully i can stop using the collar all together, and just give the 'quiet' command. we'll see. i can get one online that includes a remote... i might look into that, to help with the counter surfing. *sigh* the training never ends!

so yeah, that's about all that i've been up to. sorry for the lack of posts recently. hopefully everything has now been resolved with the server, and once i get home tonight, i will fix all the javascript errors in the message boards. i might also try and get the new design worked out. although, now i'm not liking it so much... it might be back to the drawing board. that's what i get for waiting so long to launch it ;)
