i just got word from my best friend growing up that her mother has died. i'm completely shocked. it was an accident... and so sad. they were very close, so my heart goes out to her, dealing with this... it's such a tragedy. i'm fortunate not to have had to deal with much death in my life... so when someone i know and was close to passes, i'm completely thrown. she was a great woman. so send prayers and good thoughts out to this poor family... it is such a huge loss :(

community bathrooms are interesting. there's one that has had a couple of odd incidents... that i swear could have been written by seinfeld and larry david. i won't say where it is, to save the people i'm describing... but people definitely do the silliest things. my first encounter was with a woman who was singing in the stall. and i don't mean humming softly... i mean full out gospel choir practicing... while "in the stall". and i've come across her more than once. then there's the woman who brings in vegetables to peel in the sink. the bathroom sink. wouldn't be so odd if not for the fully accessible kitchen nearby. why on earth would you prepare food in a bathroom? and today made me laugh, almost out loud. a woman brought her cell phone into the stall with her, and proceeded to carry on her conversation... not a "hold on a sec" or anything... crazy! i have a feeling these are not the last of the weird incidents...

sideways is a great movie. saw it last night at the cinema drafthouse, and had a great time :) didn't get to bed until around 1am though... so getting up this morning was a little rough... but i didn't mind ;)

no plans for today or tomorrow, so i can rest up. i'm helping out with some volunteer work on saturday for a thing called "christmas in april". i think we are going to be painting, mostly... which is good, cause i need the practice. thunderstorms are predicted, so the national's game may have to be postponed for another weekend... but drinks are still in the plans for saturday night :) then somehow i have to fit in 10 miles (without getting lost this time) on sunday... training for the marathon can be time consuming! good thing i love it ;)

i got some photos that my boss from work took of the 5k on saturday... and here's me with my prize :)

at least i don't look as worn as the last race ;)

well i managed to crawl out of bed this morning and go running... who knew i was a morning person? i ran for 40 minutes, then grabbed lily and took her to the park for a half hour. she went nuts, having been couped up, healing from her surgery for the past month. :) i'm going to start bringing her (weather permitting) out to the park/on a walk in the early hours, now that the weather is warming up. i'll do it again in the evening... that girl really needs the exercise! as for being sore from sunday's fiasco, i was surprised at how running didn't hurt as much as i expected it to. so i'll be up again tomorrow morning... gonna try out my cool reflective belt :)

the plans for this week are shaping up. goin out to see 'sideways' at the cinema drafthouse tomorrow night. i'm really looking forward to it, and those that know me, know why ;) then saturday i'm volunteering my time to help paint a house in dc for a volunteer organization. that should take all day, but it's for a worthy cause. then we might go to a national's game (for those non-sports fans, the nationals are the new baseball team for dc) on saturday evening. fun times! now i just need to get through today... but it's lookin good so far :)

so i attempted to do a training run of 8 miles yesterday... and decided i that i would try to find my way downtown. i'd done it once before, following someone... but couldn't remember the exact route. well, i got lost. wound up doing a couple circles, trying to find my way to the memorial bridge. i can drive there, but the trails don't run alongside the highways. i finally found the bridge after dodging a couple cars and running alongside roads with no sidewalks... and made it downtown :) i ran along side the mall, and around the monument... but when i attempted to go back across the memorial bridge... i got lost again. i wound up at the entrance to arlington cemetary... then turned the wrong way and found my way to rosslyn... the exact opposite direction i was aiming for. so after having already run my 8 miles, i started walking... trying to find a shortcut home. i even called my sister to get directions online... nada. i wound up taking the l-o-n-g way home... what should have taken me 80 minutes turned into 3 and a half hours. thinking i was going to be running and getting hot, i had only thrown on a tshirt... and it was 47 degrees out. so that long trip home was freezing... after a while, i could barely bend my fingers, and my elbows were getting stiff. then it began to rain, but luckily i made it home before any huge downpours. live and learn, i guess :) next time, i'll bring some cash or my metro card, so that i have transportation options if i get lost again. but i did get the miles in... but my muscles are killing me today. if someone knows a good site that has maps of the trails/routes around the pentagon/arlington cemetary area, so that i can find my way to the bridge and back, i'd appreciate it.

today's a monday, but being wiped out after the run yesterday, i was in bed shortly after 9pm. so i'm well rested and alert this morning :) just with very sore hamstrings...

had a good race this morning! made the 5k in 27 minutes... nothing speedy, but a best for me! the hills were rough... but i chugged through. even wound up getting a $10 gift certificate for coming in 2nd in the 20-29yr old females category! :) so i'll celebrate with some running shorts maybe... nothing else going on this weekend. plan on going out with friends tonight... should be a good night. but now, i'm off for a nap!

got one! a reflective belt, that is. always good to know someone in the military, who is generous :) so now i can run without the sun in safety. i also got the racing photos back... and although they're not pretty, here they are... these were taken at the finish line, so i'm really wiped out...

i have yet to see a "good" photo of someone running a race. we're not out there to look pretty! i take that back. there are definitely people who show up to these races all decked out... so maybe they are... but i'm definitely not! it was freezing, so i had two long sleeved shirts on and pants... but you can see the people around me wearing shorts! crazy runners ;)

i took lily out with me on my run this morning... only it probably wasn't the safest, due to the fact that i don't own any reflective clothing, and we were out at 5am, before dawn. so i need to invest in some... or something i can wear like a belt or an armband. around here, the running military boys wear a bright yellow belt... and they're pretty nice! nice and light, and you can see 'em for miles. but i can't figure out where they sell those... all i can find are vests or individual shirts/pants with stripes on them. anyone have any ideas where i can find them, being that i'm just a civilian? maybe i can get a nice army boy to rustle me up one ;) hehehe...

"You can't make yourself happy in the past no matter how hard you try."

got that quote from the cool running boards this morning, and it stuck :) it's a good one, and one i completely agree with. i've never been an entirely unhappy person, but i've have a few dark moments in my past that i wish i could erase. but i agree, i can't undo any of those... only learn from them, and keep on keepin' on :)

woohoo!! my official race time: 55:12 and my pace was 9:03!! I almost did a 9 minute mile!!! that's so crazy. compared to my last race pace of 9:50!! i'm so stoked. i had read that going longer distances ultimately helps you shave off time when you run smaller distances... and it's true :) that's the fastest i've ever run! in running, you'd call that a pr (personal record). i'm so proud :) so now we'll see how i do in the 10k at the end of may... that's another month away, and we'll see if i can get it even lower than that. i'm hoping by marathon time to get my race average to about an 8 min mile... but we'll see. i did manage to crawl out of bed in time to get in my run this morning. i'm trying to convert to being a morning runner, so that i have the rest of the day free. we'll see how that goes. i'm not the best at getting motivated early... but what is the addage... three weeks of doing a routine before it becomes a habit? well, there's one day down :)

meeting tonight for my neighborhood, and then another meeting tomorrow for the park. then it's relaxation time for the race on saturday!

this is a pretty big announcement... macromedia joining with adobe! coldfusion (the language i develop in for work) is owned by macromedia... so i'm excited to hear about what this means for cf!!

alright... two more races to add to my list. :) i registered today for the army 10-miler in october... it's about three weeks before the marathon, so it will be a good race to determine how i am in regards to my training. it should be cake for me to run by that point, if i'm on schedule. if it's not, i'll have to decide whether i'm really ready for the marathon. i'm also planning on running the capitol classic 10k at the end of may... then the 10-mile trail race in june. so by the time the marathon hits, i'll have been in 6 races... not including a half marathon somewhere in there, and probably a few more 5k/10k runs :) have i mentioned i'm addicted to these races? they are so fun, and keep me motivated for training! it's fun to have someone cheering you on all the time, and it keeps me running faster to not have people passing me left and right. plus there are some very attractive looking individuals that show up... so that's always nice ;)

so if anyone wants to show up to help cheer me and the other racers on, i'm going to put up an "upcoming race" schedule. i am aiming to have one race a month at least... but july and august may prove to be too hot to be running like crazy. but we'll see when it gets closer. speaking of too hot, it's getting in the 80's this week. and it's only april. crazy :) i'm going to attempt to start my morning running routine tomorrow morning. word on the street says it is still ridiculously humid even when it's dark out in dc... but other runners claim early morning is still the best time to beat the worst of the heat. we'll see if i can drag my butt out of bed :) still need to get into the running store for new shoes, and some running shorts. and my pants are the only thing not made of cotton that i own... so i will need to invest in some cooler running clothes within the next couple of months. but we'll see how my budget is. if anyone knows of any sweet discounts for that kind of gear, pass the word along!

in other news, i think lily's spay surgery wound is infected :( it's red and she seems to be in pain when i examine it. so a trip to the vet is in order tonight... i just hope it's treatable with some meds, and they don't have to do anything drastic. it doesn't look pretty... poor thing. i thought she was doing so well :(

off to work... it's monday... but so far it looks like it's gonna be a good day :)

had a great weekend with my friend from out of town. he came in on thursday, but we didn't meet up until friday morning. spent the day running around, ate lunch at whitlows, then made it out to brickskellers friday night. i got pretty drunk, and we stumbled on over to mad hatter's and although i remember very little about how, we managed to find our way back home around 3am :) then we got up on saturday, went downtown to the national gallery of art and then walked around the mall. it was a gorgeous day! then we saw the movie "beautiful boxer", hosted by the dc filmfest, about a transvestite muay thai boxer... great movie! the fight scenes were fantastic and it makes me miss muay thai classes. after that we headed over to finn mccool's to see scythian, a great irish music band that had me dancing around with everyone else at the bar. so much fun :) but we had to leave the bar early so that i could get some sleep for the race this morning. i woke up at 6am, and headed over to the race. all my training has paid off, i think i shaved almost four whole minutes off of my 10k time from the last race! i am so excited! so it's been a great couple of days. :)

as for this week, i don't have any major plans. i'm running a 5k this saturday with people from my work all the way out in fairfax. i have a meeting tomorrow night, but other than that, nothing of importance. it will give me some time to catch up on my sleep and let my body recover from the ridiculous amount of alcohol i consumed this weekend. fun stuff :)

man, i knew it would go fast, but it's only been a week! the registration for the marine corps marathon is already closed. good thing i got in when i did :) so now it's me and 30,000 other people running 26 miles in october. crazy :) i started training early... coolrunning has a nice 20 week program to gear up for it that i'm following. so now it's just dedication and motivation that i need for the next six months. i really need to get my runs done in the morning... it's a lot cooler, and it would free up my after work time... leave more room for happy hours ;) speaking of happy hours... the plan may now be to meet up some friends at tapatinis in capitol hill on friday for an all-you-can drink night (only $20!) that might be pretty fun :) i also found a good flick at the dc film fest on saturday. it's called 'beautiful boxer' and it's about a muay thai fighter. seeing as how my friend and i used to be active participants in muay thai, i think we'll both enjoy the fight scenes! good times ahead! :)

man, this week is going by fast. it's already tuesday... i have a meeting for the dog park tonight... then i have friday as a vacation day, since a friend coming in that morning and staying until monday. it's my first visitor to dc... should be a great time! i think we're going to brickskellar's on friday night (the bar with over 1000 beers)... then finn mccool's on saturday for some good irish music. i've heard 'my brother's place' is a good bar... so we might check that out as well. i've also got the 10k race this sunday that i feel pretty ready for... and then a 5k race with people from work the following weekend :) another friend of mine also just sent me a list of all the events going on around me this spring/summer... there's so much to do! i'm really excited... from film fests to a bbq battle. nothing like walking around downtown getting samples of good bbq beef! :)

anyway, it's going on five months now that i've been out here... i'm still lovin it! i could do without all the ridiculous price hikes... but having friends who have the hookup at nearby bars helps :) i will be in michigan for a weekend in may, then again at the end of june... and possibly the following weekend for the 4th of july. so between trips back to michigan and events out here, i think my summer is booked! 12 more weeks til marathon training begins... and only 7 more weeks til the 10-miler... time to get serious about training and get some new shoes already...

doh. lily got a hold of one my netflix movies... "out of africa" and proceeded to chew it to death. so now i have to figure out if i should just pay to have it replaced, or actually find someone on ebay who has a five dollar copy they want to get rid of. i really need to stop leaving things of value on the counter. but a dvd? who would have thought they were so tasty.

in other news, i actually went running today for a good amount of time. a friend of mine actually took me running around downtown since it was close to 80 degrees out and sunny... so beautiful outside. however, we were dodging people left and right... so it may not have been the best idea to go down there, but it was still pretty fun. made it for 80 minutes... granted i stopped and walked for some of that time... but it's the longest i've ever attempted to run, to it's got to count for something ;) the 10k is this sunday, so i needed to get in a long run before this weekend... now i'll probably do one more long-ish run... and then a bunch of shorter runs to get my speed up. i'm really trying to beat my last 10k time. then i can concentrate on running even longer... i'm doing a 10-miler in june! i can't wait :)

today was such a gorgeous day! the parade was fun, but i am so disappointed that i didn't see any tap dancers. but still worth it to have gone :) we then walked around all downtown, saw some really pretty cherry blossoms, and just got to see a lot of dc on a beautiful spring day! it's 70 degrees and sunny... the festival was very entertaining... we walked around the tents and saw the performers doing japanese dances and playing drums... very, very cool. thanks to joe and katie for getting up at the crack of dawn, just to see the parade... hope you guys enjoyed it as much as i did! :) i tried to get some photos... but my batteries weren't charged, and started fading toward the middle of the parade. so i didn't get many decent photos... but the ones i did get, you can view here :)

what a great day!

pray for no rain tomorrow! it's only supposed to be in the 50's... so to watch a parade in the rain would suck tomorrow. but it's supposed to stop tonight, and be cloudy in the morning... so cross your fingers! for those of you who are not in the dc area, the parade i'm referring to is the national cherry blossom festival parade that happens every year here. it's a pretty big deal... over 100,000 people are expected to be downtown tomorrow for it. the whole thing has been going on for about a week... with the festival ending tomorrow :) lots of fun stuff downtown... usually it's too crowded for most people that live here to go check it out (so i've heard)... so i figured i might as well go see it while the novelty is still there for me :)

yay for friday's... and yes, that is an ipod shuffle in the photos on the right. thanks to a generous donation from john t... i am now the proud owner of a 1gb ipod!! woohoo! it's fantastic! i love it. it works just like a flash drive... plugs right into my usb port. it comes with a lanyard to wear when you're running... but i'd prefer an armband. but those suckers are 30 bucks... not cool enough to fork over that much :) anyway, thanks john!!

woohoo! got registered today for the marine corps marathon! it's official, i'm running it! :) no backing out now... just have to get through training that starts in july. looks like i will be running it alone... my friends that have run it before are too busy this year to partake. but they promised to cheer me on :) 26 miles... hoo boy. look out :) it's not until the end of october, so i'm sure i'll be writing much more on this subject. need new shoes, still... and will need to figure out where to train around downtown. i have some friends that live in capitol hill, and there are quite a few running routes around the tidal basin, etc. i'm a little worried about trying to train in the summer, since dc is ridiculously hot and humid (so i'm told). so going on long runs might have to be done in the early morning hours, before the sun gets up... otherwise i run the risk of passing out. yikes. but the race starts early, so i guess training early will only help me more :)

anyway, no plans for this weekend, other than the parade on saturday. should be a fun day, and it's supposed to be pretty nice out! i've heard the cherry blossom trees are gorgeous... and i've seen some photos already (they are in peak bloom right now). so lookin forward to that, and then next week is another four day work week, as i have a friend coming to visit me (my first visitor to dc!) :) fun stuff comin up... plus the weather has been so great... i love spring... :)

it was a good game last night... but unfortunately, the illini didn't pull off a win. my unc friends are ecstatic, i'm sure... but i was really, really hoping illinois would pull through. oh well... on to pro basketball, and then no sports til football season. i'm not a baseball fan, despite the new dc nationals buzz around town. i like going to the occasional game... baseball stadiums are fun places during the summer :) but i'm not a big enough fan to watch it on tv, or follow it closely.

anyway, cherry blossom peak blooms have been moved forward a couple of days... so thursday or friday i may go on down during lunch and check them out. saturday's parade is an early one, but should be fun :)

as sad as i am that state didn't make it to the final game, i'm glad to see the big 10 represented :) and as a former illinoian... i have to side with the illini tonight, and join my other friends in champaign to root for the blue and orange :) so go illini!!

this week is pretty uneventful. just have the game tonight, and then i'm going to the cherry blossom festival parade on saturday morning. they're going to have fun tap dancers, and the trees are supposed to be in full bloom by that day. i'll be sure to have my camera... i've heard the trees are beautiful. i might go sometime during lunch this week down there, since they are supposed to be in bloom today-saturday. it will be much less crowded if i go during the week, rather than try to see them on saturday. but we'll see. things are pretty busy.

in other news, today is laura's birthday, so happy 26th laura :) now we're both one year closer to 30... and vinnie's is tomorrow. i miss the east lansing crew... hope you guys have a wonderful day :)

how odd. i tried multiple times yesterday morning to get my computer to boot... i thought for sure i had fried something. but low and behold... i tore it apart last night... and then inserted all the cards in one by one... and voila. computer is fixed. go figure. maybe it just needed a "break" :) regardless, i'm back up and running and very happy about it. lily's also doing great... you'd never know it from her energy level that she just had major surgery two days ago. her whines, however, are pitiful... she's still in pain... poor girl.

tonight the spartans play unc... go state! i'm meeting friends early to watch the illinois game first... so i'll be nice and intoxicated tonight :) woohoo, good times :)

dammit. well, i woke up to quite the mess from lily this morning. so now i'm a little worried about her. i'm going home for lunch to check on her... hopefully it was just the anesthesia.

but i also woke up to a blinking alarm clock this morning... meaning i lost power at some point last night. so no big deal, i go over to my desk and turn my computer back on... wait... wait... oh great. my computer won't boot. no post beeps... just fans spinning, the hard drive sounds like it warms up... but then nothing. *sigh* so after spending 500 bucks last night on lily's surgery... i now have to go computer shopping tonight and spend a quality friday night fixing it. i'm just praying to god my hard drive is ok. so if anyone has some really good advice on what may have happened with my computer, i'm all ears. in the meantime, i'm going to swing on over to best buy and pick up a motherboard... which will then require me to also get a new cpu and memory. *sigh* i hear the old rally's commercial cashier now... "ching"... "ching"... "cha-CHING!".

so i'm waiting for someone to pop out and say "april fool's!!!". at least it's friday :) but that's a warning... no one email me this weekend, since i will have no computer access til monday morning, unless i can fix it tonight. a weekend with no internet... i'm going to go crazy...
