yeah, i have none :) i keep volunteering my time away... but i can't say i regret it... i love the things that are going on. endless meetings i could do without... but they do help me stay focused, and on deadline with what we are trying to do. last night i attended a meeting regarding getting funding for the lights at our dog park. the process we have to go through to get this grant is practically like being a masters student and defending your thesis, with all that's involved. we have to show all sorts of community support, fundraising, cost estimation... and then compile a proposal and letter of intent, followed by a presentation to the commissioners, to show why we deserve the grant for our project. it's a lot of work, but thankfully, our group has been very organized and motivated, and we have much already fulfilled. we won't be approved until february 2006, but at least we have time to get everything together :) meanwhile, i am also involved in another process, to try and get other sources of funding, since this grant most likely will not cover the entire cost (based on the estimates we have so far). but i'm learning a lot in the way of how arlington county works, and i meet more and more individuals that i recognize each time. it's all very interesting to me... i love being involved in it all. it does require some committment on my part... but i've never been stranger to being relied upon :)
i'm also attempting to take over organizing the puppy parties that occur every saturday morning from 9-11am over in the shirlington dog park. the current host will no longer be available after labor day... and it would be so sad to see the parties disappear. they are a GREAT socialization place... but i'm not sure i can commit every saturday morning each month. so we'll see what happens. but i can't resist getting an opportunity to play with a bunch of puppies! :)
as for my car... they of course had to order a part, and of course, the part is still not in. so i am still carless, and most likely will be without my car until i return from michigan. which is fine, it was just going to sit in my parking lot until i returned anyway :) but taking the metro sucks... i don't know how people do it every day. maybe if i had a longer commute, i would bring a book... but standing on a platform for 10 minutes... jamming in a severely crowded train and standing for another 15 min for the ride, then waiting another 15 min for a shuttle to arrive just sucks. a ten minute drive turns into a 45 min commute. but i really shouldn't complain. i at least only have to do it temporarily... i'm really sorry for all of you that are forced to do this every day!
day after tomorrow and i'll be in michigan! mmm... nachos... it's a family reunion staple :)

upon first hearing the news, the sticker shock threw me, and i was a little upset... but once i talked it over with someone, i realized he was right, it's not so bad and i did get by without spending a fortune. the verdict on my car: $323 to fix both the steering jamming problem, and the brake issue. my "key ignition tumbler" busted, hence why the key would not turn. that part was not under warranty, and cost $273 to fix. the brakes had something go wrong with the hydraulic something (related to the abs system) and was under warranty, so i got away with only having to pay my $50 deductible on that. so good news on the brakes... it didn't cost me a grand to fix those suckers. but the ignition tumbler pisses me off... my car has only 38000 miles on it, so what the hell is crap like this failing so early for? *sigh* that's still 300 dollars more than i have to spend on my car... so it still sucks... but way less than it could have.
anyway, it's tuesday... had a good night last night, but this morning is not boding well for the rest of the day. i forgot my wallet at home, so i'm scrounging for food here at work... found two granola bars and a few pieces of chocolate... and i left home today without eating breakfast, so i'm starving. those will hopefully last me most of the day, until i get home at 5. then i have a meeting at 6:30 to 8pm, then i need to go running. hopefully not around the area where there was a homicide last week. near my regular running route (thankfully, i always avoid the spot that it happened) there was a "random act of violence" about two weeks ago... and it was right around the time i would have been running. but i own some heavy duty police issue pepper spray that i now carry with me... and i try to either run with a friend or my dog as much as possible. but for training, the majority of my runs will need to be solo... i might be spending more time on the treadmill than i had originally planned.
anyway, on a happier note... i get my car back soon, so i can quit taking the metro, and i also get to go home in three days. it will be good to hang out with the family and see some friends i haven't seen in a while :) is it wednesday yet?

i had my car towed this morning... it took them an hour and 45 minutes to show up, thereby causing me to miss the last shuttle from my apartment building to the metro station... but at least now it's getting looked at, and i can finally get some answers about what is wrong with my car. i also looked into my warranty, and luckily, i had purchased the 'extra care' warranty on the car, meaning steering is covered for 6 years or 75000 miles :) plus towing was covered up to $100, so that helped tremendously. i'll know later today the damage... and whether or not the brake fiasco was just something simple.
this week is going to go by fast... on friday evening i leave for michigan, for our annual family reunion. joe is coming with me, to meet my family... don't know if i should subject him to everyone at once, but that's how it worked out :) we'll be there til sunday night, and then be back in time to spend the fourth of july in dc :) i can't wait! this past weekend i made it out to the bbq battle on pennsylvania... joe's cousin wound up feeling under the weather, so i spent a couple hours with his younger cousin, and his cousin's husband's cousin (say again?) we had a good time, and i came home with two reggae cd's that i have yet to listen to. hopefully it was worth the five bucks :) then my other friends met me down there, and we meandered over to the nearby bar that we have happy hours at frequently... a couple of strawberry wheats and two shots later, and i was feelin mighty fine :) then sunday it was too hot to do much... and since my car was broken, i couldn't take lily to the park with the stream... so we hung out inside and watched old movies :) not a bad weekend, and the next few should be even more fun!
now if i can just get through today, and somehow get my car back without breaking my bank, i'll be a happier camper...

this summer might turn out to be one of the best summers i've ever had... i've got family trips twice in july, and then in august, i'm accompanying joe out to new york, to go to bouckville, a huge antique show that happens every year, and to spend a week with his family. not to mention going to long island for lobster fest the weekend before that... and then all the other events like the ones going on this weekend, in downtown d.c. :) i'm pretty excited :)
and i'm actually pretty surprised... all this whining about funds and car repairs and the like have gotten me a few emails asking about donations, and if i take them. generosity always surprises me. so yes, to those that have asked, my me@carrie.cc email accepts paypal donations. but just so you know, i have been putting out the word that i'm looking for work, and i have been applying for freelance jobs... so i'm not totally slacking over here.
in car news, i'm screwed. i've had multiple people attempt to get my car to start... but it looks as though towing to a repair shop is my only option at this point. *sigh* so thursday morning or wednesday evening, i will be taking it in to a local place, and pray to god that they find something really minor to fix and have all my problems disappear. i know, wishful thinking... but i'm wishing hard :)

or it hates me. one of the two. so i finally have money to get my brakes checked, and schedule to take it in this morning. i put my key in, and it won't turn. and the steering wheel won't budge. it's jammed. even with the help of joe, and rocking it back and forth, and putting all my weight on it... nada. so i may have to get it towed to the dealer, or a repair shop, to figure out what the hell is wrong with it. *sigh* so i metro'ed into work today, and will most likely have to rely on public transportation inevitably... until i can afford to fix my car. i also think my warranty is just expired... but i have to check on that. 38000 miles and already problems. oh good. reading online, steering problems with the focus average about $400... and then there's my brakes, which could be anywhere from $200 to $900 depending on why my lights are on. i should just wait and get them all checked at the same time. i had a plan today to just take it to the local midas shop near my house to get an estimate... and then made an appt at a trusted local repair shop a week from today (their first available) to actually get it fixed. but i might be carless for a bit, until i can come up with the funds, in case both repairs lean towards the high end. i can't take it in unless i am prepared to pay it all. and if it's that expensive, that might be upwards of a month or so. *sigh* i hate cars. i imagine owning a home will be even more of the same... only on a much larger scale, as home repairs seem to be more extensive.
at least i have transportation available to me. and the grocery store is 4 blocks down the road, so i won't starve :) but it's pretty freakin annoying still. just pray nothing happens to lily, so that i don't panic with trying to find a way to get her to the vet's without a car. although, there's a vet two blocks down the road, so in an emergency, she can definitely get help quickly.
anyway, so i am going to attempt to make it down to the festival this weekend, but won't have much to throw around. at least it's a free event :) and i do believe the bbq battle has free tastings! yum! i can't wait!
tonight is also the final nba game tonight... GO PISTONS!!!! i've been watching and i think they can do it!!! repeat, baby! :) so for having such a craptastic week, i'm actually in a pretty good mood. so my car sucks. so money is tight. at least i'm not dying :)

my sister is the best. she just had me look up the lyrics to reba's new song 'my sister', and it's us to a 't' :)
Hey girl it's me i just called to tell you hi
Call me when you get this
Haven't talked lately so hard to find the time
Give the boys a big kiss
Tell them that I miss them
By the way I miss you too
I was thinking just today
About how we used to play
Barbie dolls and make-up
Tea parties dress up
I remember how we'd fight
We made up and laughed all night
Wish we were kids again
My sister my friend
Oh yeah before I forget I met someone
I think I really like him
I was wondering if I'm jumping the gun
By going out on a limb
And invite him home for Christmas
To meet the family
Seem like just yesterday
You brought home old what's his name
He had been drinking
What were you thinking
After dinner he passed out
We can laugh about it now
We've learned a lot since then
My sister my friend
Do you think you could come and see me sometime soon
We could just hang out like we used to
It's late and I should go
But I can't hang up the phone
Until I tell you
What I don't tell you enough
Even though at times it seemed
We were more like enemies
I'd do it all again
My sister my friend
sisters rock :) love ya danielle!

this weekend was a fun one. i wound up staying in on friday night, and watched as joe showed me how to make baked ziti and watched 'st. elmo's fire'. what a great movie! and i'm not just biased because it was filmed in dc ;) and the ziti was good... joe's a way better chef than i will ever be. then saturday was mostly spent in bed... we also watched 'the distinguished gentleman' with eddie murphy... another great dc movie :) then i went swimming and swung a bat a little at the batting cages... and then got ready to go to a party with some friends. we wound up leaving to go to another keg party out in south arlington, and had a great time! didn't get home til after 2am... what a great, great day. possibly one of the best i've ever spent. sunday i actually got out and ran 7 miles like i planned... and then met up with joe to visit with his cousin and his wife who he had not seen in a long while. we had fun eating out at 'the reef' in adams morgan... and hopefully we'll get to see them again sometime this week :) i did not look forward to this morning after a fun weekend... it was a rough one. nothing big going on this week. i still need to have my brakes looked at, and a couple meetings to attend. then this weekend is the bbq battle... lookin forward to that! might do some hashing on thursday... still undecided.
so here's to another busy week. next weekend i go home for the family reunion! should be great! :)

so i didn't make it out there last night. i would have had to forgo the scheduled run, so i'm planning on going there next wed. and doing my run in the early morning that day. today was rough getting into work. i left at 8:40 and didn't get in until 9:45. it took me an HOUR to go TWO miles. i could have ran there and back in that amount of time! to make matters worse, there wasn't even an accident. it's rush hour traffic, that i usually miss when i leave my house on time. man. as if running late wasn't bad enough. the time it takes to work just exponentially gets longer the later i leave. *sigh* that's dc for you.
anyway, tonight is the public meeting for the dog park, come one, come all. should be a good turnout :)

so i'm going to attempt to do something dc-esque tonight, and go see a military performance on the white house lawn:
The Twilight Tattoo is an hour-long sunset military pageant. The program features The U.S. Army Old Guard Third Infantry, units and ceremonial units-The old guard Fife and Drum Corps and The U.S. Army Drill Team; and The U.S. Army Band Blues jazz ensemble and vocalists from The U.S. Army Chorus and The U.S. Army Chorale.
sounds like it is something i'd enjoy... it's also happening next wednesday, so if rain deters me this week, i won't miss it all together :)

and i'm back. with running that is. may and june were sad, as far as getting my miles in. but i was sidetracked with something more important ;) i got my 45 minutes in yesterday though, with the goal of a half hour today. the heat is really rough to run in... thank god i have a treadmill accessible to me, that's not only in air conditioning, but also has a pool about 10 yards away from it :) early morning runs will become more frequent when i need to head outside... and joe even agreed to accompany me on some of them! the long runs, i've decided, are going to be solo runs... i like having that time to myself once a week. two hours with just your thoughts to deal with is really nice. it will be tough getting all these training runs in over vacations and hotter weather... but i'm gonna give it my all!
in the meantime, summer is busy and is flying by. this week, not so much... just a few events. i have a meeting tonight, and a big public meeting on thursday. speaking of which, if you would like to support the towers dog park, and live in the area, feel free to attend the public meeting this thursday, 7pm at the carver community center. there's a 'twilight' performance on the south ellipse of the white house tomorrow night at 7pm (free), and then friday night is the parade in the marine barracks (in se, also free). no big plans for the weekend... then next week i have another meeting and joe is disappearing for a few days... but i plan on going downtown for the folk life festival (free), and the big dc barbeque battle (free tastings)! yum! then the following weekend i'm back in michigan for our family reunion... then the next weekend is jackie's baby shower... she's already 32 weeks along. only 8 more weeks til the little girl is here already! then joe and i have plans to go to lobster fest on long island, and then i have a nice week long vacation, to visit joe's family in new york in august. phew... lots of events, but all fun :)
and the ads on the side are only temporary. i'm trying to determine if they are worth it... mary e. suggested putting up a 'donation' tab... but i feel odd asking people to donate without having a cause to donate for. maybe i could put up a page allowing people to dictate exactly what their donations are to be used for? i'm not crafty enough to manufacture something to sell... so if anyone has any ideas that people might want to donate for... that'd be helpful :) maybe if i posted one of the outstanding loans, and showed people's contributions... hmm... who knows. i'm still attempting to be frugal... i cut out my morning coffee (it was $1/day), and will soon be cutting out soda all together (i buy a 12 pack every two weeks, to bring a can to work). little things like that will help... if you have any other corner-cutting ideas, i'm open to those, too :)
ok, back to muggy central i go... bleh... it's only tuesday...

activity level this weekend was at a minimum. i took lily to the park today... that's probably the most i moved all weekend. didn't make it out to college park on friday, due to my brakes not being 100% reliable. so i metro'd it out to buffalo billiards to give a happy birthday to kevin. then saturday i slept til noon, and then woke up to go to a family party with joe... and was back in bed by 12:30. this muggy heat really wears me out! today was mild... went out to breakfast, took a nap, took lily to the park with the stream so she could cool off... now we're both just hangin out in the a.c. :) goin out to watch the pistons game tonight though... hopefully it turns out better than the last game...

oy. today is not starting out well. upon driving home this morning, my car abs and brake warning lights came on, and the owner's manual (being so helpful) reports that when both of these come on simultaneously, it's time to get your car serviced immediately. nice. but money has been really tight since i moved out here, and i'm worried that there is something majorly wrong with my brakes, and whether or not i can afford to have it serviced right away is questionable. i stretched myself uncomfortably thin when i made my move out to dc... even despite the help i received from my folks... and i still haven't quite recovered from it. so over the past few days, i took a hard look at my expenditures, and where my money was going. even cutting out all unnecessary expenses, and limiting my nightlife adventures, i'm still not where i am comfortable, money-wise. so i've decided to look for freelance work, and even resort to part time data entry, if i can find something that is reasonable. just for a short while, so i can get rid of some of my debt i have been incurring over the past few years. lay-offs, dog expenses, apartment moves, and my extra curricular activities have all wreaked havoc on my debt to income ratio. so i am going to have to bite the bullet... be super frugal over the next couple of months, and find extra work wherever i can. once i'm in a good spot, i can relax a little... but it's gonna take a while, and some creative efforts on my part.
in the meantime, dc is great with free events downtown :) i'm looking forward to venturing out there... so this summer should still be very fun, despite my money issues :) and last night's jurassic five concert was great! i definitely miss going out dancing. i'll have to make sure what little i do go out involves shakin booty at least a little bit ;) so if you hear of any great money-making opportunities, give me a shout!

woohoo... tonight is the jurassic five concert. gonna have to nap when i get home to get ready for this one. doors open at 10pm, so it's gonna be a long night. got a run in this morning, so i got that out of the way. good thing too, as it is supposed to be a HOT one today. 92 degrees and m-u-g-g-y. bleh. marathon training starts in four days... 20 weeks from sunday and i'll be running my little (hopefully) arse around dc for 26 miles! it will feel *so* good to get that accomplished... a huge achievement for me! i'm still tracking my progress in the fitness blog... so i'll know soon enough whether or not my lofty ambition is attainable :) tomorrow night is the "cruise" with lily... although, it will depend on how tired i am after tonight as to whether we make it down there. maybe a short nap after work will be good enough.
it's wednesday! half way to the weekend! :)

this month is filling up pretty quickly with appointments and fun things to do :) i have a feeling this summer is going to fly right on by. tonight is the final pistons/heat game... and i'm really hoping i see a repeat of saturday! should be a good game! then tomorrow night is a meeting for the dog park... and then wednesday is the super late jurassic 5 concert. then thursday i found out there is a 'canine cruise' in old town that allows you to bring your dog on a 40 minute boat ride down the potomac :) so i'm going to attempt to bring lily on that, but i'm not sure she'll really like it. i think she'd rather be in the water than riding on it :) saturday is a bbq... and some much needed REST :)
so i'm gonna try taking it one day at a time... i've got to get my running in there somewhere. this past weekend was great... i spent friday night hanging out with joe, waiting for his friend to arrive from out of town, and got whipped in 'you don't know jack'. i love that game... it makes even losing fun :) then saturday i watched the pistons win, and rested up for the race on sunday. woke up bright and early sunday morning... but my friends and i wound up way lost trying to find the park (good to know i'm not the only one who is inept at finding things in this city)... what should have taken us 45 minutes took us TWO HOURS and we missed the start of the race :( so i didn't get to run the 10 miles... but the race coordinaters let us run the trail (5 miles) without timing us... so we got to run a really great trail even though we were late! it was great! proved how really out of shape i am to be running through forests and up hills... at one point, i fell down a stream bank and got all muddy... doh. having rained all day friday, the course was a little slick. but it was still really fun, and i can't wait to do it again next year. this time, we decided we were going to sign up for the 'series' of races... there are 3 10-mile trail runs in the spring. by that time, i should be up to the challenge! so we felt really good despite our getting lost :) then i watched part of joe's softball game out at west potomac park, and then went to a bbq with fellow dog park folk. great food, good wine, and lots of laughs... it was a great night, and a really great weekend. :)

woohoo... the weekend is here :) it's a dreary friday... cold and wet... but it should be hot and sunny by sunday, just in time for me to run a 10 mile trail race! i'm heading all the way out to somewhere in virginia... i'm really hoping i make it. even if i collapse at the end, there will be free quiznos food waiting for us at the finish! :) mmm... toasted :) other than that, no real plans. hanging out with joe and his friend that's in town, and resting up for the race. so that means no going out for me on saturday night. which is fine... i can always use a night off. then after the race, i can take it easy the rest of the day... hang out by the pool :) next week i'm going to a show for jurassic 5 on wednesday. it's a late one on a school night, so thursday will be rough... but it should be a really fun time! i'm looking forward to that :)
and the pistons need to get their act together tomorrow night. seriously.
