oh man, i've been looking for something like this for a while now... i love it! it's a version of google maps, that allows you to map out running routes by double clicking:

www.sueandpaul.com/gmapPedometer

so fun! now i will know for sure just how far i ran! i'd love to get a gps wrist gadget... that actually uses gps to map your running distance. someday, when i'm rich and famous maybe :)

thanks to the generosity of my parents, i was able to go to the new running store in clarendon, and i got new running shoes!! i knew my old ones were worn, but it's like night and day with the difference new shoes make! i got the adidas boston classic... they were in my price range ($80 in the store, and $65 online) and they fit my foot really well. i was given a suggestion by a friend of mine that you should get your first pair in the store, so you know what to get, and then get a second pair of the same shoe online (cheaper that way), so that you can alternate shoes. that will make them last longer. so i'm gonna try these out, and next month, if i can swing it, i'll get the second pair :) i took lily for a 3 mile run in them last night... it was fantastic! now all i need are a pair of shorts to run in, that are not made of cotton. i've got a 5k in two weeks, and i'm ready to go! :) the store itself was really fun... i could blow a whole paycheck in there. they've got everything from shirts to socks... none of them cotton, and i want them all :) so hey, if anyone wants ideas on birthday and christmas... *cough* running gear *cough* ;)

i'm looking over my calendar for the month of september and october... and weekends are filling up fast. i signed up for a 5k in september, in addition to the 10 miler and the half marathon in october. i'm also visiting detroit, and going out of town for the half marathon... plus the weekends i am home, i've agreed to petsit in my apartment. and my parents are also coming to visit soon... so that leaves little time to plan anything else. then in november, i've got a trip planned to long island for a wedding... so almost every weekend until thanksgiving is spoken for! goodness. granted, the 5k won't take up the whole weekend... but the dog park is still occupying my time, as our fundraising efforts have to be completed by the end of september. so it's more meetings, and i'm moving in two and a half months... so that has to all be planned out as well. since we are moving into a smaller place, and we have repeat furniture, we have to look at storage options, and discuss what stays and what goes. then it's the actual packing and moving... *sigh* so much to do. i'll be looking forward to the holidays, when i get a break from all the craziness! then once we're all settled, i know i'll be a happy camper.

but until then... busy, busy, busy. going to new york again for labor day this weekend... should be fun. then the following weekend is the 5k, so i'll need to make sure i run sometime over the weekend. as long as it doesn't rain, i should be fine.

hurricane katrina looks like a doosy... i have a friend whose family lives just east of biloxi, mississippi. so keep them in your prayers... they're getting pummelled today. :(

i'm stoked for tonight. i haven't been out for ethiopian food since february, and i'm also hoping to get some dancing in tonight, too! i feel like i haven't been out in forever. this weekend is also pretty low key... no major plans, and it will give me a chance to clean and really get things organized in my place. have to get some side work done... but overall, i'm glad there's no major events happening. lots of things coming up in the future... plans to visit people, going home, and weddings this fall... should be fun. i even got back into my running groove this week... we'll see how long it lasts. but hey, i get new shoes next week! :)

out in d.c., there was some sad news. i heard about the capitol lounge burning down... i'm really glad that i got to see it before the fire. there were a lot of lost items that can't be replaced... it really was part of history on capitol hill. old political and election paraphenalia... all gone. it can be rebuilt, but those memories can't be replaced.

but off to ethiopian food, and buying something to help get my dog to quit eating her POOP. yuck! it's so disgusting... she's not lacking any vitamins, and she gets enough to eat... i seriously think she does it because it tastes good to her. so i found something called "prozyme" for pets that supposedly helps remedy the problem... we'll see and PRAY it does... gross.

i've started to restrict access to most of the photos i have online... so if you liked the flickr photos to the right, and want to see any new ones i upload, you have to sign up for a flickr account (it's free) and add me (hoochifyd) as a contact. however, i have to edit you to say whether or not you are a friend or family member... so just signing up for an account won't give you access.

in other news, i officially registered for the half marathon. now to get in the preparation time... and to get some sorely needed new shoes...

whew... made it back. i had a wonderful, wonderful weekend in NY with Joe's family. i took a lot of photos, but not as many as i'd have liked. email me if you want the link to the album. but despite the lack of good photos, his family was fantastic. made me feel right at home, and everyone was so friendly. even when lily ate the pie we were going to have for dessert :) we might be going back for labor day weekend, but that's still being debated. i just hope i made as good an impression on them, as they did on me :) the property where he grew up was gorgeous... there's a stream running through it, and lots of trails to get lost on. they also own a house on a lake.. and lily loved splashing around. wouldn't go in over her head... but loved splashing about in it. we took the rowboat out one afternoon for some fishing... didn't catch anything but it was still fun :)

so we're back, and this weekend i hope won't be too busy. i did get some good relaxation in... and i feel really rested today. nothing really big coming up, other than training for the half marathon, and getting ready for labor day weekend. have some meetings coming up... but nothing major. hopefully that will give me time to get everything sorted out with my apartment, and moving in three months. lots to plan for... i just hope it all goes smoothly!

scarier news, but still important for people to know:

view the registered sex offenders that might live near you (sorry michiganders, the maps aren't ready yet, but will be soon) on google maps...

my day has just been made. hell, my whole month has been made! hershey is getting adopted! a girl saw my post on craigslist, and visited hershey at his other foster home... and i found out today, she's adopting him! i'm so, so happy! i was getting worried that he might be around a bit longer, and that it would be tough... but i knew he'd win someone over! :) :) :) woohoo!!! :)

so summer hits, my knee acts up, and my shoes fall apart. that, and serious lack of sleep are among my top excuses of why i have not maintained my training with running, why i have gained 7 lbs in 6 weeks, and why i am no longer running the marine corps marathon. *sigh* basically, it all comes down to my lack of commitment to my training program. why did i give up? boredom... lack of the serious runner mentality... and just plain laziness. i have found i go through these periods every once in a while... last year, it was in the spring that i fell off the wagon... so for a year and a half, i've kept up momentum... and then crash. no more.

so now i'm back to square one, as i haven't run in over a month. yep, a whole month with no running. at all. but lately, i've found my interest in running picking up again... i'm starting to read about new trails... and peppy music on the radio starts to make my feet twitch. i think it's the upcoming fall season, and the promise of cooler weather... but whatever it is... my enthusiasm has started to reappear :) so i decided to find a spring marathon to start training for... one that is a little more than six months away... and some smaller races in between, to keep my motivation up. so now i'm excited to start training for my first half marathon in october! i'm still signed up for the army 10-miler... and then the following week is the half marathon. should be a good warmup, and i'm stoked! my good friends are running in it, so i'll have company... and it will get me more prepared for the marathon i am signing up for in april. then... if i make it that far... i will be participating in the marine corps next year. hopefully. i really would like to make a goal of participating in a marathon every year and a half or so. but the training time is ROUGH... finding energy every single week to do those long runs is tougher than i thought it would be. but soon, i'll be sharing living expenses... which means buying new shoes when i need them, instead of wearing worn out shoes that make my knees really sore, and a new gym membership (couples get discounts that make it affordable). and i'm hoping my new living location will provide me with ample running spots and running partners. we'll see... but the main part was finally acknowledging that i had lost the passion for running. who knows though... it could be that i just needed a break. sometimes i find that i immerse myself into something new... only to burn out when i aim my goals too high. i did it with healthy eating last summer... went too strict and 8 weeks into my program, i did a week long binge on nothing but fast food and candy. but that break made me realize i was too strict... and the new plan i adopted was MUCH easier, and wound up helping me in the long run. so it may be the same with running... i took on a marathon before i was mentally ready, until running became a chore, rather than the sport i loved. so i took a break... and now i feel really ready to begin again. only now, my sights are on more attainable goals... like a 10-miler and a half marathon in 8 weeks, with a marathon much later. ooo... and new shoes, too :) starting slow will be tough... but better than feeling that familiar knee pain from doing too much too fast!

so half-marathon, here i come! :) 13.1 miles... hopefully i can finish in a little over two hours...

so the phone is working today... sorry if you tried to call when it wasn't. today marks the three month mark of when my lease expires... but i know i'll be moved in far ahead of that time. it always helps when you have overlap of leases... moving bit by bit will make it easier to get things organized between joe and i, and will give us time to rearrange things so that we fit, dogs, cats, and all :)

two more days til new york... meetings tonight and joe's brother arrives tomorrow... then off we go :)

if you've tried to call me since sunday, my phone is not in service at the moment. service will be restored on monday, but i'll be in new york... so if you need to get a hold of me, email me, and i'll send you joe's number.

in other news, meetings tonight, tomorrow, and thursday... then i leave friday. phew... gotta get through the week!!

so. freakin. tired. i can't keep my eyes open at work... and it looks like i've been crying, my eyes are watering so bad. i'm back from a fun weekend... but there was a lot of driving involved. what was supposed to take 5.5 to 6 hours wound up taking 7 on friday night... so we missed the poker tournament. and then sunday, it took almost 7.5. *sigh* but it's a lot more bearable when someone makes the road trip with you :) saturday was really fun... i met a ton of people, and had never really heard a new york accent before. that was, until saturday :) almost felt like i had walked into an episode of the sopranos... it was nuts. but i loved it. lots of good food, and joe's friends have a beautiful house. everyone was super friendly, and i heard some great stories about joe's college days :) total, there were probably about 40 people there... so quite a good turnout! they even had a horseshoe tournament, and i'm proud of joe for taking away the trophy :) as for eating lobster, i chickened out, and couldn't bring myself to tear open mine to eat it. i couldn't even convince myself to watch joe do it... i had to look away or i was gonna hurl... but once he got all the good parts out for me, it was super tasty :) but yeah, i am SO not a good seafood eater, if it looks like it could jump off the table and swim away. i doubt i'll ever be brave enough to try crab... but we'll see. i wish i had taken my camera... i would have gotten some excellent photos.

anyway, it was fun, and i'm looking forward to the annual tradition :) i have a lot of work to do this week, and then friday lily and i leave to go back to new york, to meet joe's family. fun, fun... i can't wait! 5 days of vacation was just what the doctor ordered. now i just need to make it to friday, and i'll be golden...

yep, it's that time of year again! the perseid meteor shower is fun to watch, and i always try to get out there to see a shooting star or two. here's a good link to read about the shower.

tomorrow is the big day for our ny trip. found someone to take care of lily for me while i stuff my face with lobster... so probably no more updates til i return next week. then it's another busy week, but not as busy as this week... and i leave again! lily gets to come with me, and swim in a lake for the first time in her life. i can't wait! she's gonna love it :)

jackie and allecia (ally) came home yesterday, and ally is doing great :) all tests came back normal! thank goodness... i was really worried. so i'll be taking a trip home soon, so that i can visit with them :)

lobster fest is in two days! yum, and i've never been to long island before... i can't wait! little nervous about meeting the friends and the whole crew... but more excited than nervous :) then next weekend is the big trip to joe's family... lily will get her first swim in a lake! hopefully the weather is nice and we have good fun :) all in all, the next two weeks should be fantastic.

now to just get through these next two days... busy, busy, busy... and hershey says goodbye tonight! i'll miss the big bear... he has been super sweet these past two days... i really hope he finds a home soon.

i wish i could record some of the things i overhear sometimes. today took the cake... in a serious discussion about something work-related, i was trailing behind a few business people when i heard one of the men say "she was like the proverbial turd that would not flush..." um, what? where the hell did you learn THAT phrase? i couldn't stifle my giggles at that one... glad i lost them down the hall or i would have inevitably burst into laughter. for future reference, in a professional setting, i don't think it's ever appropriate to use the word "turd". good lord...

in other news, jackie has yet to return from the hospital, and there are complications with her little one that might prevent her from returning home with her. so think good thoughts that everything and everyone turns out ok.

this week i'm busy as all get out, and then i will have a much needed vacation with mr. joe. hershey is still up for adoption, even though the poor guy did GREAT yesterday at the adoption event. there was no barking, and he let everyone pet him and gave lots of kisses. i think his age scared most people off... poor guy. i only have him for two more days, and then he's off to another foster home.

anyway, back to my busy day, and busy week...

sorry to alarm everyone... i got about 10 messages yesterday asking if i was engaged. nope, that's not it, although i can see why everyone thought that. my bad!

i started petsitting for two golden retrievers last night, and the couple whose house it is was kind enough to let me bring lily and hershey with me! so i am staying in a really nice house, last night through sunday, with all the dogs. they have a nice yard, a decorative pond (which lily and hershey took NO time to jump in) and a nice big house. which is good for having four large dogs running around! it was fun last night... but it's supposed to rain this weekend, so i hope i can get them all exercised outside in between rain showers.

joe and i also decided that we are moving in together, when my current lease is up (which is very soon!). we're gonna stay in his apartment for a couple months, until the two bedroom opens up in the place we want... so it will be tight for a bit, but we're both really excited about it. we'll be saving a lot of money, and we already spend every moment together as it is :) it will be a definite adjustment... and we will have to be creative when it comes to storage... but it's only temporary, and i have no doubts that we can do it.

so no engagement, but still be on the lookout for changes soon...

lots of changes coming this way. keep a lookout, or email me to ask what's up. note to all of you who read this, that haven't emailed me or called me in a while... you might want to do so. soon.

it's a big change... but one that has been overdue for a long, long time.

don't worry, i'm not dying. someday, but won't we all ;)

well hersh is back... and i'm back with my morning routine of visiting the park at 6am, running him down :) i actually don't mind being awake at that hour... but my lack of sleep starts to hit me right about 9am, and that's when coffee helps :) the bbq at the park on sunday was great, and we made over $350 for our lighting project! we're still planning more events, and this one was really fun. i'll post photos when i find more than five minutes of free time to spare. this week is fairly tame... nothing major going on. petsitting for a few people, and on sunday, i'm driving out to gaithersburg for an adopt-a-day event with hershey. the lab rescue group adopts out a lot of their dogs that day, so hershey's got a good chance! it's a little far, but if he finds a home, it will be worth it :) then next weekend is lobster fest on long island! the following weekend, we had a 10 day trip planned to visit joe's family... but his work schedule might cut that a little short. but it should still be fun, and i'm really looking forward to it :) jackie is due any day now... and her doctor has determined if she has not delivered by the 9th, they are inducing her. so within a week, little alecia (still working on the spelling) sommerville will be here! :) i can't wait, and i know craig can't either :)
