slacker with a big capital 's'. that's me this week. i had an awesome run on tuesday night... but haven't run since. i'm not worried... 5 miles tonight, 3 tomorrow, with the big 10 on sunday still puts me at 23 miles for the week, which is 3 more miles than i did last week :) so i'm still on track with training... but just really felt wiped out the past two days. and today i woke up with a sharp pain in my hip... and if i press it while i walk, i get a 'popping' sound. i'm hoping it's just sore from doing too much walking at the convention center the past two days in bad shoes... but we'll see. i pick up my packet information tonight for the race on sunday... and after tonight's run, i'll know if the hip will suffer or survive. i'm so excited for it, it's crazy :) if you are watching the army 10-miler, i'm #12045 wearing a black shirt and black pants with a white racing stripe down the legs :) there will be so many runners, that it will be very hard to spot me... unless my hip gives out, which in that case, i'll be the girl lying in the middle of the road :)

saturday i'm going to be a judge at the annual 'dogtober day' events in arlington. how fun is that? i get to watch cute dogs prance around and do tricks, and give them prizes :) i swear, getting lily has opened up a whole new world for me... and i love it! i'm assuming it's similar to having kids, and attending school events, joining the p.t.a, etc... so this is great practice ;) then sat night joe and i are heading out to help a friend celebrate his birthday... so that will be a fun night. hopefully not *too* late a night though... i have to be at the starting line at 8am sunday morning! ugh! good thing i'm a morning person ;)

next weekend we're going out to the maryland renaissance festival. very, very simlar to michigan's renn fest... which i absolutely love. my favorite is finding the hair braiding booth, getting a funky braid, and then wearing around one of those circle head-band/flowery/ribbon things all day :) that, and the soup in a bread bowl, and the giant dill pickles... yum! last time i went to the michigan festival, laura helped perform a wedding reception, where we were the wedding "guests" and part of the show. it was fantastic, and it makes me miss my friends back home that used to go with me. *sigh* another drawback of moving far away. but hopefully we still have a great time, and i'll take lots of photos :)

i'm still packing and moving things around. my sister has won my lovely down comforter, my pots and pans, and my couch/sofa slipcovers... and whatever else i want to get rid of :) everything she doesn't want is being sold at a sidewalk sale, that my new landlords are holding for our apartment complex. so that's convenient :) other things (like my mattress and boxspring, couches, etc) will need to be posted to craigslist and/or ebay. i've got a lot to do this month... ugh. not to mention the other bazillion things going on. hey, at least i'm not bored! :)

look out guys... thanks to jackie (from work, not from michigan) for sending me this link... i had to laugh, but in the "wow, girls are crazy" sort of way:

yikes. bitter, bitter girls... and wow were some of those guys a*holes!

i had a great run last night. i love running around downtown, along the mall and by the memorials. the temperature is cooling down, and i got an extra kick of energy last night... so instead of the planned 4 miles, i wound up running 5.2 :) i couldn't help it... on my way down the mall at sunset, i get to see the washington monument before me:

makes me wish i could carry my digital camera with me on my runs. it was so pretty. then i got to turn around, and see the capitol building all lit up at night:

and run up to and around that. seeing everyone leaving in business suits makes me wonder who i'm passing when i run by. definitely could be a congressman or two :) plus the mall is FULL of runners like me... keeps me motivated. then on my way home, i run by all the restaurants with outdoor patios and can smell all the wonderful food... makes me hungry for dinner by the time i get home :) definitely more fun that running around the arlington neighborhoods. much more scenery to enjoy.

so time for a 4 miler tonight and tomorrow... then taking it easy before the race on sunday. a couple of friends are running it with me, so i'll have company at the starting line. in other news, work is getting pretty busy, and today and tomorrow i get to check out the washington convention center for a couple of sessions. that'll make the week fly by... i can't believe it's october already! joe's birthday is coming up in three weeks... and i'm hoping to make it a great day for him. no word yet on if i can "officially" move in as a tenant to our new place... the paperwork is still being done... so i have to hold off on any major moving as to avoid trouble. so i'm busy packing and organizing things at my old place... and i still need to find moving boxes for free. i'm so pissed that i didn't keep my old ones from last year. i had anticipated and planned on staying put for 2-3 years... so i ditched them. i'm kicking myself as i speak. oh well, live and learn :)

this weekend went by too fast. i flew in friday night, hung out with my dad, and fell asleep at about 10:30. then saturday had a fun time at the wedding shower, and got to see allie, and the hell that is colic for jackie and craig :( i feel so bad for them... she's a tough one, but such a cutie. i got a few photos, but no where near as many as i'd wish i could have gotten. my fault for not getting there earlier... i went out to dinner with my mom and sister, and didn't get over there til almost 9pm. but it was really good to be able to sit and chat with everyone, even if it was a bit rushed. i then drove over to see laura and mike... and then got home around 2:30am. which didn't help when i had to be up at 5:30 to leave for the airport. *sigh* so i didn't get much sleep, and had to take a nice long nap on sunday to catch up.

so i'm back, and it was fun. i will have more time and money next year, after the holidays, to make more trips back home. that way, i don't have to try to fit everyone in, so that no one gets pissed off that i didn't stop by.

this weekend is the big 10 mile race... i got my last long run in on sunday evening, so i'm ready! then in two weeks is the big half marathon... i'm excited for both. i'm hoping they have fuel belts there at the running expo, so i can avoid shipping charges... but either way, i've been keeping with my training, so if i can continue it for two and a half more weeks, that baby is mine! :) other than that, nothing exciting... meetings this week, and a dog fun day on saturday. and of course, more moving. we're getting a storage facility this weekend, so that we can move boxes and bigger furniture out of my place. i will be so glad by the time november rolls around, and i'm completly out. i really hate moving, and now both the new place and my old apartment are a wreck as we try to find places for everything to go. it's not helping things, having stuff scattered everywhere... so i'm trying this week to get a little more organized with my stuff. i tend to go a little crazy when my things are not put away. baby steps... baby steps.

and bleh, it's monday...

i'm armed and ready. digital camera is packed, and i'm headed to michigan tonight, and i can't wait to see little allie. i have to get a lot of photos in now, because it will be another two months before i get to see her again over thanksgiving. and kids at this age grow like crazy! hopefully i can plan more weekend trips back home next year... this year found me too broke to do much.

as for running... i sold my microwave last night, and as a result, had to wait around for two hours for the person to pick it up. so i didn't get to go running... which means my friday rest day has turned into "i need to run 5 miles" friday. i'm geared up for the 9 miles i have to do on sunday... and the 10miler race is next week! i'm super excited about it... it will be the biggest race i've ever attended.

but for now, i have a bajillion things to do, and i'm still slowly bringing things over to the new place. the cat's come with me on sunday... so that should be fun :)

i'll post photos of the little doll when i get home... she's a cute one! looks just like craig... it's hilarious :)

last night's run was fun :) i took lily downtown for a change, and we ran down pennsylvania and around the capitol. it's quite a difference from running around the arlington neighborhoods. much more urban, and a LOT more people out... i had to keep lily pretty close to me. which she was good about... she keeps up with me pretty well :) but now i'm a little more self conscious when it comes to how i'm dressed... there's a few popular bars on my route that had people outside for happy hour... i'm not used to having people notice me. not that i can really look attractive while running... i'm usually purple faced, sweating, and look like i'm about to die. so i may have to look into a less-traveled route... but with that, i have to beware of the higher crime areas. so we'll see... but i had fun with her. and she got a lot of comments about "oh look... how cute! just like my yellow lab!" so that's fun :) she's usually pretty popular amongst dog lovers. i'm also not used to the street lights... gotta plan a better route so i'm not standing around waiting for lights to change...

5 miles tonight! only 10 days to the 10 miler! :)

lost my phone last night. woke up, grabbed a shirt for work to take back to my apartment (i moved over all my closet clothes last night to the new place, but still have my dresser, with my other clothes, back at my apartment). got to my apartment to realize: i grabbed a tshirt on accident. so now i have no shirt to wear to work... and am forced to wear the same shirt i had on yesterday. got to work, and accidentally shoved my hand against a wall with fresh blue paint. *sigh* i need coffee. luckily, i found my phone. how it got in the backseat behind the passenger seat, on the floor, i'll never know... but i found it :)

hopefully the rest of the day gets better. i have a meeting tonight and will be trying to get rid of my couches soon, so i have to take photos. i have a whole list of things that i need to get rid of... once i get it all organized, i'll post fliers in my building, and on craigslist. stuff like my foreman grill (joe has one), drinking glasses, silverware, wine holder, broken desk, couches, pots and pans... all has to go. luckily, there are so many people moving down here that i should have no problem. one thing we still have yet to buy is a corner desk, for our computers. he has a flat screen monitor that hooks to his laptop... so he doesn't need much room. i however, have a big tower and an older monitor that weighs a ton... and the corner where the "office" will be is shaped like this /---\ (with a small flat part, where the normal right angled corner would be). that makes it a little tricky to fit our stuff there... we were hoping to find something so that our monitors can be angled, and we could sit facing each other, sort of. kind of hard to explain. anyway, we need to find that, so that i can bring my computer over, and start doing work at his place. that, and a storage facility are top of the list. i hear hints that joe might be getting me a present to make the setup more doable (he keeps telling me that flat screen monitors are not that expensive)... but we'll see :) i get picky when it comes to electronics... especially computers... so hopefully we can save money and just work with what i already have, and save the money for a laptop. i'd love that more than anything... i'm hoping to save up enough to eventually replace my desktop tower. someday...

this weekend wore me out. we had a very successful car wash on saturday for the dog park. only problem was that there were only about 8 of us... so from the time i arrived at 10:30am until 4:30pm, it was constant business. my arms were killing my yesterday... and my legs were super sore as well. not to mention my ridiculous sunburn i got. plus, i had to stick to my training schedule, and i had 8 miles as my long run yesterday. i took a nap, but it still made for some rough running. needless to say, i'm exhausted. this week is fairly busy, but not too bad. i am coming home to michigan this weekend, for a short visit... i'm ready to take a million photos of jackie's baby :) it's too bad this is such a short visit... i won't be home again until thanksgiving.

next week i begin some major moving. joe has cleared the way in his closet for me to begin moving clothes over... so my project for this week is to weed out my clothes and start bringing them over. we don't have a storage space yet, so i can't move any heavy furniture until we have a place to put them... but things like my clothes, videos, dishes, computer, etc, can all start to be moved. next weekend we'll be looking into getting a storage space, so that we can pack and store things that we need when we move into a larger space, that just won't fit now. like bookshelves and books, dressers, end tables, big wooden chests, etc. we also have to do some rearranging, to make room for things like my computer, lily's crate, the cat supplies... we only have two closets in the entire apartment. the bedroom closet (which is jammed with clothes and shoes) and the front closet, which stores the vacuum cleaner, coats, and a couple other items. that's it. so everything else, we need to get creative. we bought a storage shelf that fits over the toilet, for our towels and random bathroom items (qtips, soap, etc)... and the space under the sink holds cleaning items, razors, and other shower supplies, as well as tools and random items like light bulbs. i still have yet to figure out where i am going to put the cat litter and the other pet supplies... and we're still figuring out just where we can put a desk/table to hold two computers. *sigh* it's going to be interesting... but i'm excited, all the same :) i went running yesterday around the neighborhood... it's so much more interesting than where i was forced to run by my apartment. so at least now i have extra incentive to stick to my schedule!

speaking of which, i'm proud to say i have completed two weeks of my training goals, and i'm on to week three! less than two weeks to the 10 mile race, and less than four til the half marathon! i'm confident i can make it through... but i realized yesterday that although i'll be able to finish... it's gonna be painful, thanks to my lack of training in the month of august. but once the half marathon is done, it's just my training runs and some 10k races left... so i can go back to easing into the mileage, so that i'm really prepared for the marathon in april :) i also decided to switch up my reward... that if i make it to the half marathon, they have a running expo at the event, and most likely i'll be able to find the fuel belt i so desperately need. i carred around a full water bottle for the entire 8 mile trek on sunday... and it sucked. big time. so i'll save the skirt for another goal... the belt is half the price and more of a necessity :) plus i'll be able to use it this fall, rather than with the skirt, having to wait for warmer temps. that would be a nice spring goal... maybe if i make it all the way to march with my training, i'll get a skirt to wear in the marathon. that way, it will motivate me to train in the winter months, and i'll have time to train in it, before the big event :)

ok, back to work... and back to massaging my poor sore calves...

on my long runs, i start getting super thirsty near about an hour... and this sunday my 8 mile run i'm anticipating to take at least an hour and a half, if not longer. for now, i'll just be dragging along a water bottle (or some cash)... but i found an even better product than the camelbak catalyst i had previously wanted:

fuel belt

*sigh* i wish i could afford it now... but this will be another reward goal of mine, in the upcoming months :) maybe i should swap this for the skirt goal? hmmm...

whew... it's finally friday. work has been stressing me out... but i think the running routine has been helping. i sleep better at night, and the runs are becoming easier. i'm up to 22 miles a week again... which will soon creep to 25 and eventually 30. two weeks to the 10-miler, and four weeks to the half marathon! one of my friends that is participating with me, is running the full marathon, that happens at the same time. we're looking forward to celebrating at the end of the race, with free beer at the finish line :) i'm just looking forward to finishing my longest run ever... the most i've ever run before this is 10 miles.

but this weekend i'm petsitting, and helping at a car wash. joe and i may also take a trip out to ikea, to look into some nice storage/organizational items. we are going to have such a tiny place, that anything to help us maximize the potential is ideal. but i am getting more excited as i move more items over... next item on the agenda is to move the cats over. that should be fun :) lily is spending the day at the new place today... we're slowly getting her acclamated to her new home. so far, she's doing pretty well!

i also managed to find a recipe for some "light" fettucini alfredo, and made it last night for dinner. yum! i haven't had that in ages! then joe whipped up some homemade guacamole with his ripe avocados that he'd bought... what a great dinner :) i'm not the world's greatest chef, but joe helps by answering my questions like "um, is it supposed to look like that?" :) and if i screw it up, he helps by figuring out what we can add to make it better. tonight he is making fajitas with the steak he marinated... it's so great to have someone who knows what they are doing in the kitchen :)

anyway, thank god it's friday. i've got events and moving and packing to do every weekend from now til the second weekend in november. i'm struggling with a couple of bills... but by christmas time, i will have everything squared away. but for the next few months, money is tight, and i'll have to get creative when it comes to doing things on the weekend. i've also started a new wishlist for myself... amazon has now broken things into separate lists:

my amazon wishlist

so now i can keep track of things i need or would like to get for our new place! if that link doesn't work, just search for my name, and you should find it :)

ok, i don't know if i'd go that far, but i like it a lot :) ann forwarded me this article today about a woman who also found running later in life... and it was pretty fun :)

confessions of an adult-onset athlete

i went running last night, and have full intention of running again tonight. 4.5 miles is on the schedule... building up to the 8 miler this sunday.

in other news, i'm attempting to make tacos for dinner tonight. joe's such a good sport when he lets me attempt to cook. i'm finding more and more recipes that i'd like to try... when my funds allow it, i will get more brave and try to cook more. as much as i like to eat out... it hurts the pocketbook and also hurts the waistline. so in combination with my running, i'm attempting to work back in the foods that i love and are much better for me than a slice of pizza hut meat lover's :)

and i'm still aimin for that skirt! two weeks down... going on week number three of seven til the half marathon!

i forgot to report on the race i ran on saturday night. well, it wasn't a personal record (PR) for me... but it wasn't horrible. my time was 28:36... my PR for a 5k is 27 minutes... but with my lack of training for the month of august, i'll take it :) the race itself was interesting. i didn't like the 6pm start time, nor did i like the fact that they had a water station after mile 1, where there were people on both sides. for those of us that don't want to stop, it made it impossible to keep on running through, and around the people grabbing cups. plus the race was scheduled to start at 6pm... but they decided to do 25 minutes worth of "thank yous" and events like a trumpet solo, singing the national anthem, etc... so standing around that long will really affect your running. we didn't start the race until almost 6:30. but they had medals at the end (which was nice, but caused a major jam at the end, where people needed room to walk) and the free food was pizza, hamburgers, and hot dogs :) plus the long sleeve tshirts were nice... but for being the fourth year of this race, you'd think it would have been organized better.

anyway, i did ok, and i'll probably do it again next year :)

i'm slightly less busy this week... one meeting tonight, with a few things i need to finish this week. last weekend was fun... i went to a wine and cheese party for the dog park, and tasted some really good wine! plus joe and i won a gift certificate to alladin's eatery, so we're excited to try a new place :) then i went running sunday morning, with the intention of getting in 7 miles. i tried to go around the pentagon, completely forgetting it was 9/11, and of course the area around the pentagon would be closed. so i back tracked, and attempted to find my way down across the memorial bridge... but by the time i reached it, i found out there was a "memorial walk" there, and it was closed as well! argh! so i had to turn around again... and by that time, had reached my 75 minute limit. so i stopped, and luckily, i have the best boyfriend who came to my rescue, and picked me up :) so i made it the 7 miles... but it wasn't the route i was hoping to run. this sunday i have to make it for 8 miles, so hopefully i fare better :) only two and a half more weeks til the 10 miler. 8 miles this sunday, 9 miles next, and then i should be ready! then only two weeks to the half marathon (and the running skirt) :)

in other news, after the half marathon, i may also get a camelbak catalyst (water pack that sits on your waist), to help with the longer runs (longer than 13 miles). carrying a water bottle in my hand sucks, and there are no water fountains along my way. if i run downtown, i can find an open 7-11 or CVS to stop and buy water at... but that takes away from running. so that will be my reward... if i make it to 15 miles, and have kept up with the 5 days/week training schedule... getting that. by that time, it will be november, and I'll be in marathon training mode, for the marathon I want to run in april!

as for weight loss... hmmm. I am up another lb this week, after splurging at the wine and cheese party, and at the bar opening on thursday. but with the increasing mileage, and the better concentration on not overeating, i'm confident it will be back down soon. it better, or i'm going to be out of clothes to wear!

banana anyone? :)

i think it would be a wise move for me to take up spanish again. an interesting thing i've noticed since leaving michigan... the hispanic, spanish-speaking population is a LOT bigger in the u.s. than i ever knew. i was surprised at the amount of spanish that is spoken all around me, on a daily basis... in central illinois i was surprised by the large amount of workers there, and now here in d.c., i can walk into stores and just along the street, and i constantly hear spanish being spoken. my high school classes only allow me to get the jist of what they are talking about... i wish i could understand more. even yesterday, i read a news article about two girls from bulgaria who visited ocean city maryland for summer work... and how one girl who knew both spanish and english was surprised at how much more she used her spanish skills! amazing... maybe then i could walk into mcdonalds and order in spanish, like so many other people here do. and the hispanic population IS the fastest growing minority... interesting...

i'm all about rewarding myself if i make a goal and stick to it. finding something that's not oriented around food, however, isn't so easy. most of the time, i want to say "i'll let myself eat a pizza" or "ice cream is my treat for doing so well". not exactly the mind set i am looking for. so this week, i've made it a goal to keep with training 5 days a week, with my long runs on sunday, so that i'm completely ready for the half marathon in five weeks. so if i do that... i found the perfect reward... a running skirt! it's so freakin cute... i have yet to hear anyone complain about it (i visit other running sites like cool running, and everyone who has one wants about 10 more) :) it's a pricey piece of clothing... sixty bucks for a skirt is a little much. but if i make it through the half marathon, having this as a reward would be great motivation to stick to my training :) i hate running shorts... i have, as a boy in my 7th grade class so thoughtfully pointed out, "big legs"... even when i was in my best condition, my shorts still ride up. so i've always preferred pants... but this skirt looks like it would be way better, and more flattering :) too bad it's almost fall... not really the time to be running around in a skirt... but hey, as long as it's above freezing, it's acceptable :) i love the "denim" color... hmmm... my birthday is right around there... but nah, i can't wait that long ;)

this weekend will be a little more relaxed than i initially thought. i am petsitting another yellow lab, and he got along great with lily this morning. so this should be a fun way to keep her entertained this weekend. puppy party tomorrow morning, then i'm running a race in the evening, and then heading over to a wine and cheese party... then it's football on sunday. so nothing crazy... and the race should be fun.

i stayed up WAY too late last night. joe and i went out to the grand opening of the "argonaut", the new bar on h street, where his friend is the head bartender. i like their drink "dark and storming"... it's rum with ginger beer. yum! the neighborhood it's in is a little frightening... but i've got 6'6" joe with me... not too worried :) we were there for a bit, and then headed over to our friend's house, and visited "trusty's" bar, which is another new bar, near rfk stadium. i like that bar a lot better... no tasty rum drinks, but their atmosphere is really fun. old gas cans serve as light fixtures, hub caps, license plates, and driving maps adorn the walls... even the ashtrays keep with the theme, being little rubber tires. good neighborhood bar... i always like visiting there.

next weekend i'm petsitting again, but no races. the 10 miler is three weeks away... i'm up to 7 miles... so the week of the race will be interesting. hopefully i don't die, because the half marathon is only two weeks after that! i think i'll be fine... i've run 10 miles before and not died. wish me luck, though... i want that skirt! :)

oh man... i just got even more excited about the half marathon coming up when i read this:

"Runners participating in the Half-Marathon will receive the following: Under Armour performance shirt, post-race food and beverage and massage. A medal will be given to all finishers."

woohoo! free massages rock! and the free under armour shirt is freakin great :) i also signed up for a 10k in the beginning of november. so now i've got a 5k, a 10 miler, a half marathon, and a 10k to run :) i'm also most likely going to run another 10k in december... racing is so fun. i got in all my runs last week, and am off to a good start by running yesterday. now if i can just get those food cravings under control, i should be good to go. it felt like i had run so far yesterday... but it was only 3 miles when i calculated it later. doh. i hope i'm ready for these races...

this weekend has turned uber-busy. now i'm petsitting thurs-sun, in addition to the events i had scheduled. i also forgot that i am taking over hosting the puppy parties at another dog park near to me... so i have to be there early sat morning to make sure it goes smoothly. so come sunday night, i'll be beat. i really need to cut back on my volunteering time, or i'm likely to go crazy soon. once i move, things should slow way down. at least, i'm hoping :)

ny was fun... got in my run around the lake, and even brought lily with me :) she finally took her first swim! all it took was us tossing food out there, and away she went. once she realized she wouldn't drown, she paddled around like a champ :) it was so nice and relaxing, the whole weekend... i was dreading coming home. so, so much to do. now that we are moving in together, i have to go through all that i own, and sell off what we have duplicates of. i only have two months to get everything out of there, packed up, and stored... and in the meantime, i've got 101 billion other things going on. i've got a dog wash, a 5k race, and a wine and cheese party to attend this weekend... then another dog wash and petsitting next weekend, and the following weekend after that, i'll be in detroit. then the first weekend in october, i've got a 10 mile race, followed by a free weekend (my first in a while) and then running a half marathon. somewhere in there my parents are visiting... phew. lots and lots to do.

but the weekend was fun... wish it were longer, as always...

well, we're off to new york, despite the increase in gas prices. at least traffic should be lighter, as most people are not willing to pay for the $1 increase per gallon :) i'm bringing my running shoes to get in a nice long run on sunday around the lake. biggest worry to me is that i wind up lost. so pray i make it out and back :)

also found some things i'd like to have someday... including a bag for race day and some nice running shorts. i love under armour... joe got me a shirt from there a while back, and it's by far my favorite to run in. so light, and no chaffing... i wear it even when i'm not running :)

anyway, out of commission for the weekend... i could use some more rest!

someone blogging about their experience down south. i can't tear my eyes away from all the news about what is going on in new orleans... i feel so helpless seeing all the pain and anguish and fear the people down there are feeling. i can't even begin to imagine the terror they are experiencing. people with guns shooting doctors and patients trying to evacuate... gangs of men raping women and shooting mothers with their children... i just can't fathom it all. so much evil down there... everyone seems so lost and so desperate... *sigh* it breaks my heart. i don't understand where the hell all the help is... i know so much effort is being put into getting help down there... but no word on to why the hell no one is really helping them. all those news cameras... the media down there seems to be in abundance... you'd think they'd resort to packing up people and getting them the hell out. *sigh*... my thoughts are not helping... i don't know what is in my power to really do. my pity isn't helping them, that's for sure.

wow... with the gas mayhem around here, we might not make it up to new york this weekend. it's insane, i can't believe i paid $2.98 yesterday when i went to the station (my light was on, i had no choice)... 10 dollars got me just a little over 3 gallons of gas! *sigh* reading the article, and then reading william's site, north carolina thought they were just "low"... but places like his town are already out of gas! i live within walking distance to work (2 miles, but i could walk it) but it'd be a pain if we ran out here. i don't think it will happen... but if prices get to $4... oy...
