well last night we had a great time. friday we were invited to join a party bus with our friends, that would tour around DC and stop at mcfadden's and polly esthers. you had to be in costume, so joe and i scrambled around to find stuff to wear. we lucked out, and joe used his vampire teeth from halloweens past, and i found my sequin top hat from my dancing years, pulled out my tap shoes, and got a 5 dollar cane :) joe found his cowboy hat, ripped up an old shirt, and made some authentic looking bite wounds on his neck :) voila! we were set. the bus was a riot... it was byob, but everyone had a great time. we even got vip treatment at the clubs, no line, and a discount at the door. the best halloween i've had in a long, long time :) you can view a few of the photos in the flickr gallery:

we had a great time, and now are just taking today to relax. we moved all my heavy furniture yesterday morning, so it's coming along! almost done... almost done!

lookin good for moving tomorrow. due to lack of boarding facilities that have open spaces in the area, i couldn't find anyone to watch lily for me, so tomorrow's trip to king's dominion had to be cancelled. i can't leave her in her crate for 13 hours :( having a dog is a lot like having a kid. when there's no babysitter, there's no nights out. so we are going to get up and get all my stuff out of my apartment early. that way, all that's left will be the things i'm keeping for danielle, or things i'm selling/giving away. then i'll have a mini-garage sale, and whatever i don't sell will get donated to goodwill. i'm really not looking forward to moving everything... but i will be really glad to get it over with. then sunday we can relax... most of the roads will be closed for the marathon downtown. sounds like a good day for staying in :)
next weekend is the trip to new york. i'm looking forward to the wedding... i always have fun at receptions. plus it will be the first one joe and i have attended together. :) oh, what fun... he fortunately enjoys them as much as i do. the drive will be rough friday night... but all in all, should be a good weekend.
not doing anything for halloween... might see scythian tonight, but that's still debatable. the bars out here are nuts this time of year... so maybe we'll venture out for a little costume contest. dupont had a "drag queen race" earlier this month. yes, picture drag queens dressed to the nines, attempting to run down the street in heels. i really should have gone up there to see it... but just knowing it was going on made my day :) ah, i love this town :)

well, the home inspection went well, and i got an unofficial approval from the new landlord :) so now i can finish moving, and turn in my keys :) phew! just a few more papers to sign, and i can officially become a dc resident :)
didn't get running in last night... i was super tired from lack of sleep the past few nights. lily woke me up at 5am yesterday and today... today i just went back to sleep and was a little late to work... but i'm much more awake than yesterday morning.
what happened to fall?? it seems like we went from a late summer to BAM freezing cold. my work hasn't really gotten the heating system worked out, so we froze at work yesterday afternoon... and my fingers are numb again today. my coffee only lasts so long. joe's making chili for dinner this weekend though, so i'm excited to bring that into work for lunches. yum! that and i am looking into some soup recipes... maybe some pasta dishes. anything warm that can be easily reheated in a microwave for lunch is what i'm looking for. so that ought to be interesting... wish me luck (and joe, for that matter... he has to eat it, too) :)

well, our home inspection has been rescheduled for tomorrow morning. which is fine... i had everything ready to go for today, so one more day won't hurt. i'm getting anxious though... i really want to get the official "you're in" over with, and get the process of getting my new license plates started. not that i'm in any hurry to get rid of my virginia driver's license, but it's just hanging around, and i'd like to get it over with. i'm also terrified that something will go wrong, and they won't let me move in. it's silly, i know... but until i get the official word, there's always potential for something to happen. rain has also been forecasted for the weekend, so the trip to kings dominion may have to wait for next year. but that will give us more time to move... this weekend is the last weekend joe will be in town to help me move my furniture into storage. so after that, i'm on my own to get everything out of there. but first, we must get the approval we need... *sigh* 20 days and counting!
i'm also starting back running today. i took the recommended recovery break from running after the half marathon, and i'm starting back slow. i'm aiming for 15-17 miles this week, and going from there. now that i have some time, and only a few weeks left of this moving nonsense, i can get back into a routine, and work on my form. my hip pain has been improving, so i'm glad i took the time off. even if i decide not to do the charlottesville marathon, i'm attempting to stick to my 4-5 day/week running schedule. i've started eating much better, and my weight is starting to come back down... so running will help keep it there :)
i've got quite a few trips coming up... next weekend i'll be in new york for a wedding on long island, a basketball game here in dc, celebrating my birthday, then thanksgiving in michigan, les miserables (woohoo!), christmas, and then new years in new york. fun times ahead! should be a great holiday season :)
other than that, nothing really going on. thank goodness :)

friday night, guess who wound up puking in the bar bathroom. nope, not the birthday boy... his wonderful girlfriend. doh. only 3 miller lights and two car bombs, and i'm on the floor. not quite sure how that happened... last week i downed a tequila shot, several pitchers of margeritas, and beer, and didn't get sick. my tolerance must not be what it used to. *sigh* but luckily joe wasn't upset... he walked me home (across the street) and made sure i was ok. then went back and hung out with his friends. i still felt terrible. i can't remember the last time i got sick from drinking. *sigh* but we spent a fun saturday inside, watching horror movies... and then sunday i took lily to a halloween party at the dog park, where she got a million treats :) we spent sunday afternoon carving pumpkins, then got pumpkin spice coffee, and took lily on a long walk to the capitol and back. it was a great weekend, and i'm looking forward to having more of those once i'm all finished moving.
this week is really busy... i have a home inspection tomorrow morning, and then i can finish moving. then saturday we're going to king's dominion, and the following weekend i'll be in new york for a wedding. time's flying by... thanksgiving will be here before i know it!

so i thought it would be nice to get joe a birthday cake, and surprise him at work with it. not wanting to just pick up a traditional store bought cake, i tried to think of a flavor he would really like. since peaches are his favorite, i set out to find a bakery that would make a peach cake. i finally found one, and checked with joe's work (luckily his cousin works there, too, so she helped me make the plans) and everything was set. however, when i arrived today to pick up the cake, the girl brought out a cake that said "happy birthday joe" and had bright clowns on it! because i had asked for a birthday cake, they had assumed it was for a little kid. doh. so i explained that it was for someone's 30th birthday... so they apologized and took it in the back to see what could be done. they came out with palm trees decorating where the clowns had been... and it looked pretty good :) so i made my way out to joe's work, and he was really surprised. the cake turned out to be FANTASTIC.... it wasn't a super sugary frosting... it was really creamy... and then had vanilla cake with peaches layered in between. yum! joe loved it, so it really made the whole fiasco worth it. that was the big surprise... nothing major, but he seemed to like it. i didn't embarrass him with any singing or balloons... which i'm sure he appreciated :) now i'm waiting for him to get home, and we're off to a great little italian restaurant, and then on to the celebration at the pub! i love birthdays, even when they're not mine :)

a big happy birthday to my man, joe... we're celebrating tonight at the local pub near our house, that he used to visit and was a regular at. should be a great time! celebrating birthdays is always a fun event. no plans for tomorrow... except recovering from tonight ;) and i've got a surprise for him that i hope he really loves... can't reveal it yet, in case he reads this today ;)
in other news, we've had to halt the moving process for a couple days. turns out my new landlord needs to do a 'house inspection' of my old place, to assess my living style. so i can't have an empty apartment without risking getting joe into trouble for moving me in early unofficially. so i get to spend a night or two cleaning the place and making it look like i still sort-of live there. then after she comes, we can really go to town and move everything out. i really can't wait to get this over with! it's like the never ending move. i'd give anything to be settled and done with this process already. my utilities are being shut off on the 14th, so at the very latest, i'll be out in 3 weeks! but i'm aiming for only 10 more days... 10 days and be done. wish me luck :)

hilarious. i got my results back from the half marathon... and i must say... a 12:30 minute/mile average isn't terrible, considering i WALKED 3 miles of the course. makes me sad to think that it would have been so much better had i been able to make it running the whole race. i must say, downtown baltimore wasn't all that great... and to emphasize my point, i read that on race day "a number of jugs of water were stolen from water stops at mile 17 & 19". nice. who steals water from racers during a race??? it caused havoc at the finish line, when those bottles of water were re-routed to the stolen-water stops, and caused people who finished the race to find no water available. let me tell you, for those who have never run a race... you NEED that water when you finish. thank god they had resolved the problem (they grabbed water from the concession stand and put it at the finish line) by the time i finished. i also got a look at the photos they took during the race. they're pretty funny... and marathonfoto.com got smart about putting up photos. you can't see the full image unless you buy it... and you can only buy the digital version if you buy a $40 "memory" cd. i don't want to pay $14 per photo to have a printed one, and $40 is a little steep... so i may not purchase mine. but in one, i knew the camera guy was there, so i flashed a big smile :) so we'll see... it would be nice to have photos of all my races.
see the photos online at www.marathonfoto.com, click the baltimore marathon, and enter my name and bib number (#4803). nice :)

i really am not a fan of wednesdays. i always want it to be closer to the weekend, and it's always just far away enough that it depresses me. i haven't been very productive this week. wait, i'll take that back. i haven't been productive with moving my stuff... i've been busy attending to items to get ready for this weekend. so tonight, the goal is to bring at least a couple boxes into storage, and pick up a few more to pack. i forget that i have items like my tv, vcr, dvd player... all that will one day be used in a 'spare' room. i also have to figure out how to trash my desk. i can attempt to sell it, but my dad and i broke it when i was moving in illinois, and it's about 4 years old... so the only way someone would take it is if they were desperate, and it was free. i need to have a mini-garage sale in my place, and just let people come take what they want. i'll figure out the best time to do that... maybe post fliers in my apartment complex. we'll see. time is slipping by... i can't believe october is almost over. soon it will be my birthday, and then thanksgiving. this year, joe and i are spending the holidays apart. it makes me sad... i've never had anyone come with me to celebrate the holidays with my family. i definitely want him there, and i'll miss him like crazy. but i know his family would miss him terribly... he's never spent a holiday without them, just as i've never left mine. and when you both live far away from family, the holidays are one of the few times you can get everyone together. so next year will be interesting :) at least i have "the bean" in the car with me. she's a great traveler! that nickname for lily has stuck... she's now "the bean" "beaner-rilious" "lily bean"... don't know where joe came up with that, but i find myself calling her "bean" almost as much as "lily". someone pointed out to me that "beaner" is a derogatory nickname for mexicans... so i try to make myself stop calling her that, even though i had no idea. anyway, she'll be making the nine hour drive for the holidays. i decided to try and get around traffic this year by sleeping at 7pm wed night, and getting up at 3am thurs and making the drive. that way, i can get there around noon, just in time to eat ;) otherwise, last year it took me 12 hours when i left wed night after work... oy. never, ever want to do that again.
so back to wednesday, and getting things ready for friday night and the weekend. i need coffee... soon...

so i ran the half marathon on saturday morning. wait, let me rephrase that. i ran 10 miles on saturday and walked/limped for 3. i did so well two weeks ago at the army 10 miler, i thought for sure i'd be able to at least jog slowly for the whole time. i actually think had the half marathon been that day, i could have finished it with no problem. but that was by far the worst race i've ever run. i think it was a combination of me not being fully prepared and trying to rush my training in, the poor eating i've been doing the past two weeks, and the course itself (way more hills than i'm used to) that allowed me to have my worst time ever. i was in so much pain by mile 10... my whole body just screamed at me. i've never walked in a race before at all... let alone for three whole miles of it. *sigh* so i'm back to square one... and i don't have any long races to prepare for, for quite a while. so i'm taking this as an opportunity to just get into a regular schedule. most of my stuff for moving is now at the new place. a few random boxes and that's it. everything else is going into storage or being given away. so i can get into a regular running schedule, run a couple 10k races, and take it from there. i need to let myself heal and ease back into longer distances. i'm trying not to get too down on myself for running so terribly... but it's hard. it was a very mentally challenging race... there was no music along the route, and so many hills! every time i reached the top of one, i'd get all excited, only to turn the corner and face another one. when i'm used to training in flat downtown d.c... those hills were killer. but it's over, and i can say i actually participated in a half marathon :) someday i really hope to participate and do well, and then do an actual marathon. but after that fiasco on saturday, i'm not too sure i'll be ready for one in april. we'll see. my next race is in november. that gives me some time to relax and build up to doing well in that one. i can work on getting faster in my 10k races... those are my favorite anyway :)
sunday was a much better day by far. my friends and i had made plans to go to a local virginia farm for cider and pumpkin picking... however, the place we went to only had a few pumpkins out, and they weren't in a pumpkin patch, but just in the pumpkin area. the whole place was more for families/kids... lots of rides and kiddie events. not what i was looking for at all. so we picked out a pumpkin to carve, and then made our way to the manassas battefield (from the civil war). it was such a beautiful fall day, we didn't want it to go to waste :) that was pretty interesting... we stood out in the fields where the battle took place, and although we didn't really take any tours, it was just interesting looking around. the scenery is beautiful, and joe did a pretty good job of giving us some history. he's a huge civil war fan, so he's the best to bring out to stuff like that :) he gave us the perspective of how the battle was fought... very cool. we then all went out to eat for lunch/dinner, and watched a couple get into an argument and hear the woman exclaim "this is the last time you will ever see me... EVER" and storm out. yikes. but the food was good at least :) then we came home and really went to town on the apartment... we got a LOT of things organized and put away. joe sold $100 worth of our stuff at the garage sale... we celebrated saturday night with a slew of pitchers of margeritas to dull my pain from the race. so with all that stuff gone, we were able to get most of our items in place. it will feel so, so good to get everything done. i'm guessing about two more weeks til it's all there.
in other news, joe's birthday is friday. we are celebrating at his old local hangout, and hopefully getting most of his friends out here to join up with us. i'm really looking forward to it. then saturday we are going to attempt to go to the rennaissance festival in maryland, but that's still up in the air. sunday is a rest/relaxation day... maybe move some furniture of mine into storage... but we'll see. next weekend we're going to king's dominion with my work, and then the following weekend to long island for a wedding. then joe's gone to arizona, then it's my birthday, and then it's thanksgiving. phew! lots of stuff coming up... but at least it's all fun :)
ok, back to work. it's been crazy here lately, and it's not helping my stress levels. but hey, at least i'm not bored :)

and i thought the spiders had me freaked out. i've been following the story of the asian bird flu "pandemic" warnings... and today there is another article on how the flu has now been found in turkey. yikes. if that stuff breaks out over here... i'm becoming a shut-in and working from indoors only, eating nothing but dry cereal. for real... i always get nervous about stuff relating to diseases... and i've never really been up to speed about any serious cases. maybe i should find out where the largest producer of the vaccine is located, and go hang out there for a couple months. *sigh* scary stuff. tsunami, hurricane, terrorism, earthquake, flu virus... um, god? are you trying to tell us something?
in lighter news, i'm leaving tomorrow for baltimore to run the baltimore half marathon. i'm actually pretty nervous about it. i don't feel ready at all. my legs have been really, really stiff this week... i woke up with cramps and tightness all in my calves this morning. but i'm going to have a pasta dinner tonight and tomorrow, lots of water, and stretch a bunch, and hope that helps things. 13 miles is a LONG way to run in pain. here's hoping i get through it, to get to the "complimentary" beer at the end! woohoo! party at camden yards! :) i'm gonna need it!
the apartment is coming along. i finally found a cover for the cat's litter box... so project smuggle-cats launches tonight. that should be interesting. my cats are not known for traveling well in the car. in fact, bailey himself has been known to get so scared he poops in the car, mid-trip. nice. so i'm looking forward to that. but it will be nice once they get settled in, to have my little family all together :) a little tight on space... but very comfy, and homey :) i'll try to post some photos of this weekend and of the new place once everything is put into storage. right now, there are random pieces of furniture in the middle of everything, so it looks more cramped than it really is. only 3 more weeks til i'm officially out... so not much longer :)

i hate spiders. so when i opened the door to the back patio last night and saw something jump inside, i assumed it was a cricket. but when lily started playing with it, i bent down to get a closer look, and discovered it was the largest spider i have ever seen in my life! my heart stopped and i freaked out. luckily, lily loves those things... and after playing with it, in one fell swoop she landed on it full force and squashed it. i was nervous that the thing had bitten her... it was so big i thought for sure it was venomous. i also had no idea what to do with it... i didn't want to get near it, dead or alive. i also didn't want lily to eat it, as joe pointed out (he called in the middle of the fiasco, and i answered hysterical, so he was trying to calm me down), if it was poisonous, you don't want her swallowing it. so thank god for vacuums. i was jumpy for a while... and tried to figure out from photos online what type of spider it was. the closest thing i could find was a grass spider... and those things look terrifying. i waited an hour to keep an eye on lily, to make sure she didn't start showing signs of being bitten... and then started to leave to go watch the yankees game with joe at a friend's house. however, just as i was about to step outside, i notice bugs all over the carpet near the back door... and i bend down... and discover about 30 baby spiders all over the floor!!! AAAHHH!!!! as if the giant one wasn't bad enough, i now had to deal with a bunch of little tiny ones all over! so i panicked again... and ran to get the raid from under the kitchen sink and sprayed the hell out of the floor. that killed them, but i wanted to figure out where they came from. turns out, there were even more outside, so something must have 'hatched' on the patio, and these guys made their way indoors. *sigh* that was it. i was so jumpy for the rest of the night, my skin was crawling... and i still jump at the slightest twitch. oh how i hate spiders.
in other news, the half marathon is saturday morning. i'm driving up to balitmore with friends on friday night, and coming back either later saturday or early sunday morning. depends on how much "celebrating" we do in baltimore :) it's gonna be a rough run... i'm just hoping i don't injure myself.
we made huge progress on the apartment this weekend. my couches are gone, and so now just the bed and my furniture i'm storing remain. we still have a lot of little junk to sell and get rid of... and i still have a lot of packing to do... but we're definitely more than half way done with the process. whew! but that's just the moving... i still have loads of calls to make and cleaning to do. slowly but surely, i'm getting there... three more weeks and i should be all set. hopefully.

whew... joe got a boost of energy this morning while i slept in, and really went to town on the apartment! so we spent most of today rearranging things and moving things over. it looks great! i'll have to definitely take some photos and send them out when we're done. right now both of our places are in shambles, but we're making good progress. i even got my computer all set up! so now i'm able to get some work done and get back online more regularly :) i really love this place... small as it may be, it's really homey. with more of my stuff, it really feels familiar and i'm enjoying it :)
selling the couches tomorrow, and packing stuff to store in our storage area. we got that all figured out today, and we can finally start getting things in there. so that's a relief. as for running, i took a couple days off to let the hip heal a bit... so tomorrow i'll throw a run in there and see how it goes. then running tues/wed/thurs and then racing on saturday! 13 miles... oy. hopefully i don't kill myself :)
off for dinner... yum... armand's pizza... deep dish... :)

the weather and stress in general has put me in a bad mood. i've noticed i'm pretty crabby today... and everytime i think about all the things i have to do, i just start feeling overwhelmed. so much packing... so much planning... even if there is a garage sale saturday, i haven't priced anything, and i don't have time to do it tonight. so unless i get up at 6am sat morning, i'll have to do it all while people browse. *sigh* still haven't found time to get a storage space, so i have to rush after work to get that done. i also am still in need of moving boxes. i have a long list of things to do... cancel utilities, change my address, change all my billing addresses for bills, change car insurance, get new license, plates, certification test, clean my old place, etc... it goes on and on. typical list of someone moving... but i'm just burnt out from having done this so many, many times over the past two years. this will be my 4th driver's license since i had it renewed when i was 25. you'd think i'd have this down pat by now... but every time just makes me loathe moving even more. i need to have a week off, where i can just pack and move... this little by little stuff is really tiring. plus my work is really starting to pick up, and i'm finding i need to start putting in more hours.
i need a nap... and maybe some chocolate... argh... is it november yet? thank god for 3 day weekends...

i've been researching, trying to figure out what the pain in my hip is, that i feel when i climb stairs and walk around in heels. it's the muscle that when you are standing straight up, you lift your left leg to the side... whatever muscle that is. so i found this article:
http://www.runningtimes.com/issues/05june/prirformis.htm
and that's me to a 't'. so now what? i have a half marathon in 9 days... i've been resting it for the past three days, and no improvment. i'm going to attempt a short run tonight, to see if it aggravates it or not... but i'm worried. if i don't feel better soon, there's no way i'm going to last 13 miles next saturday. i have a feeling i overdid it at the race on sunday... so wish me luck that i can still run on this. i'm hoping stretching and easy running (no hills and no speedwork) will allow me to enter the race... and then after that might be cause for a short break (like a week) of limited running and lots of stretching. *sigh* sick for the 10miler, and hip pain for the 13miler. that's what i get for not exercising in august, and trying to rush into training. live and learn... i'm still getting out there :)
i've also been trying to cook more this week, since joe's been super busy at work... i hope it helps giving him some downtime when he gets home, to destress and enjoy an already made dinner. so i attempted tacos on tuesday... wound up using not enough taco seasoning, so the meat was pretty bland. but still edible :) then last night found a light recipe for beef stroganoff, using light sour cream, tomato paste, worcheshire (sp?) sauce, and beef broth... and that actually tasted pretty good! i overcooked the noodles.. so those were a sticky mess... but still tasted fine. i think joe is starting to see what i meant about needing 3 times to practice making a meal before i get it completely right :) but he's a good sport, and gives me an 'a' for effort :) he makes the majority of our meals, so at least most of our dinners taste really good ;)
tomorrow we celebrate katie's birthday with dinner and drinks out on the town... so i'm looking forward to that! should be a great night. the garage sale looks like it will be rained out this weekend... and next weekend i'm out of town. so it'll be up to me to get rid of all my unusable items. might advertise in my building complex... hmmm....

even though their attacker turned out to be their teacher, these girls used their martial arts skills for self defense and he got caught. i took muay thai for that reason, and it's good to see parents putting other girls through similar training. it works! :)
i'm feeling better today... still have a stuffy head, but i'm not as out of it as i was yesterday. i can actually concentrate this morning on tasks, which is an improvement. thanks to joe, for making me tea and homemade mac 'n cheese last night... he's the best :) it's looking iffy as to whether or not we are heading to the renaissance festival this weekend... we have a garage sale that is conflicting, so we might need to postpone that for another time. but we'll see. i'm still trying to sell my couches... two people were interested, and both backed out. might be tougher than i thought. time to advertise on the neighborhood list serv! yes, my neighborhood has it's own yahoo group list... as do most other arlington neighborhoods. i love this town :)

report on the army ten miler and the craziness that went on that day.

bleh. i'm sick. only happens a few times a year... and i haven't been sick since february, so i should be thankful. but i hate head colds. so i'm sitting in a fog this morning, waiting for my eyes to stop burning.
this weekend was pretty great though... saturday i spent the day at dogtober day, and talked with a very repuatable dog trainer in arlington. she has all full classes, but since she met me, said she might be able to pull a few strings to get me in her class ;) so that's fun... i've been wanting to go back to classes with lily, to really work on things like jumping up, not pulling, and not begging for food. plus i always have fun at training classes :) then saturday night joe and i went out to dave and busters and had a great time with his cousin. i love those games! however, that night i could feel a cold coming on, and was dreading trying to run the 10-miler with a head cold. i woke up nice and early the next morning, and sure enough i felt awful. i took a quick jog outside to see how bad it would be trying to run... and surprisingly, running around helped to clear my head a bit. so seeing as how i've really looked forward to running the race, i decided to suck it up and run with my cold :)
so the race went off without a hitch... joe even woke up ridiculously early after about 2 hours of sleep and came with me, to cheer me on. he's the best :) but during the race, around the 7 mile marker, things started too look a little odd... and people around me started asking questions about the race course. by the time we reached where should have been a 10 mile marker, we were told to just keep running... people with gps devices started to really complain that we had already run the 10 miles, and where the heck was the finish? turns out, a "suspicious package" had been found on the race route, so they had to re-route the runners, and by the time we reached the finish line, someone on the sidelines shouted for the first time in 21 years, the army 10-miler was 11.4 miles! so no wonder everyone was complaining! and to make matters worse, because they changed the finish line location, they didn't have the timing mats there, so no one got any times for the race :( so i can only guess at how i did by how i felt, and by the mile marker clocks... which wasn't too bad. i was in pain later, but during the race, i felt fantastic... so i can't be too sad :) i did have fun running it, which was the important thing, and it made me more confident that i will be ready for the half marathon in two weeks.
the rest of day though, i felt completely awful. running around aggravated my sinuses, and i felt like i had a fever and a bad stuffy headache the whole day. joe took good care of me... i really owe him a lot for that. we didn't get much done in the way of moving things around... but i have a three day weekend coming up with columbus day on monday... so i'll have more time to really get things going.
so this week, meetings and moving... and katie's birthday is tomorrow! we're going out friday night to celebrate, and then have the apartment-wide garage sale on saturday morning. then i have a holiday monday, and the following weekend is the big half marathon! it's a huge race, and should be much better than the race i ran this weekend. i'm ready and hopefully in better health :)
