man, i feel like i haven't stopped moving since i got back home. monday was uber busy at work... the day flew by, and i thankfully solved some issues that came up with the project i'm working on. i then rushed home in order to make it to a dog park meeting on time, which turned out really well. we met up at a thai restaurant in arlington... if you are in the area, rincome on columbia pike rivals bangkok 54 :) then the rest of the evening i spent setting up my dsl and router. normally, it takes all of 10 minutes to get the thing up and running. but i didn't realize someone else on the network had not changed the defaults on their wireless router, and so i kept logging in to his system without realizing it! my conncection kept switching back and forth, and only when i finally got frustrated and switched to directly connect (instead of wirelessly), it dawned on me on what was happening. within five minutes i had it all set. *sigh* i wonder if the person noticed... for a while, i had set a password on his router... so he would have been booted off and not known how to get back on! serves him right for not changing the settings. i'm also not using the wireless connection... my wireless card goes beserk and reconnects a billion times. it's always done that, and i've just dealt with it, since i've always been unable to have the modem near the computer. but joe needs it for his laptop... and his wireless card isn't so crazy. :)

i also went to the dmv yesterday, and finally got my dc license :) nothing special, but now i can get my car inspected saturday morning (which is free, thank goodness), hope it passes, and then get my car registered, so i can quit freaking out when a cop goes by. worst case scenario, i get a ticket... but how much would that suck? i'm a little worried my car won't pass inspection... i know i need to get my tire checked, since about every two weeks it keeps getting a little deflated. so there's a hole somewhere, but i haven't had time (or money) to get it fixed. soon... but not yet.

tonight i'm meeting with my other dog park group, and we are meeting and putting together mugs full of random gifts to hand out for the senior citizens. should be a good meeting... and i spent all of last night putting the mugs through the dishwasher. joe and i also went grocery shopping... we were completely out of food in the refrigerator, save for some eggs and a half-chopped onion. but we're stocked now... which is good, because i need to quit eating out as much as i have been in the last month. my pants are getting snug... so i'm back to eating sensible foods. jackie sent me a link to find these low-calorie wheat tortilla wraps... and i found them at the supermarket last night. 50 calories, 8 grams of fiber and only 2 grams of fat (0.5pt! for those who know WW). i'm interested to see how they taste. i made a turkey wrap for lunch, with an apple... yum! if the tortillas are good, those might become a frequent lunch item. i love wraps... either with just veggies or turkey, chicken, ham, roast beef... even sometimes tuna. lots of options! i also got veggies to make my favorite salad in the world... tomatos, cucumbers, lettuce, and ranch. 2pts, and i could literally eat it every day :)

so enough about food... i'm also joining the gym nearby on saturday morning. it's a little expensive, but hopefully it's only temporary, until our complex finishes our weight room that they are building nearby, that tenants can use for free :) but i am such a wimp about running in rainy, cold weather... the lack of exercise i think is contributing to my pant-snugness :) so by mid-february i'm trying to reach my goal. i'm almost 15 lbs heavier than this time last year... yikes. time to put that to a halt before it becomes 30!

so i had a good breakfast (fiber one cereal is my favorite), brought a banana and an apple for a snack, and made a good turkey wrap for lunch. so now i just need to resist the pizza at the meeting tonight, and enjoy the tomato-chicken pasta dish i'm making for dinner from cooking light. i've made it before, and it's really tastey! wish me luck :)

this weekend was a great family weekend. but i'm struggling to work this morning. thursday's plan of waking up at 1am went off great... i had little to no traffic the whole way! the weather wasn't cooperating however, and i ran into some snow trouble in ohio. but had it not been for that, i would have made record time :) dinner on thursday was great, and then friday i braved the "black friday" mall scene with my mom, and we made out like bandits :) i got a ton of work clothes for my birthday, for way less than we would have if we'd shopped last week :) then i got to visit with jackie and baby allie, and holy cow, that baby is cute! she looks like a doll... it's unreal :) afterwards, i headed over to see my sister's new place in detroit, and then made it back home. saturday lily got her nails clipped, and i went off to a comedy club and dinner with laura and friends. what a great time! by sunday, i was super tired... but after lunch with my aunt and my mom, started the drive back to dc. it was heavy traffic, and by the 9 hour mark, i was dozing and dying to get out of the car. and just as luck would have it... when i was about 10 minutes from home, i get pulled over by the police. apparently i didn't signal when i got off the highway, and then they discovered my registration is expired (by 8 days). oops. luckily, i think they took one look at my tired face and the dog in the car and felt sorry for me... so they let me go without a citation. thank god. i just wanted to be at home... by this time, i'd been in the car for 10 and a half hours. so i pull up to our place... and when i go to open the door... i see that someone (i think) had busted it open... the wooden door to our patio was splintered all around the handle, and had pulled the wooden board completely apart. *sigh* so i freaked for a moment that someone had broken in while we were away, but luckily, the door was the only thing damaged. so i'm not sure what happened, but it was drama i didn't want to have to deal with.

so i'm going on 4 hours of sleep today... and super busy at work. oh well... at least i'm home and had a great weekend :) this week is pretty busy... i have meetings tonight and wednesday night, a party saturday evening, and i'm petsitting this weekend. it's gonna fly by... i just hope i can find decent sleep at some point...

ok, i need advice from folks who know cell phones. i would like to purchase a cell phone, however, the one i want is a little pricey. i can find it at some stores for less... but it's for an "unlocked" phone, without having to purchase a service plan. i've done a little reading on unlocked phones and sim cards... and i need some clarification on what i'd need to do. would i have to "unlock" my current cell phone, to get my current sim card out, and then put it in my new phone? is it that simple? not that unlocking my current phone would be easy... but as far as the process goes, is that it? are there any issues? the phone i want works well with cingular, and my current phone is cingular. so i would not be switching service providers... but to "upgrade" my phone through cingular is like $300 more expensive than if i bought an "unlocked" phone.

other than that, i'm off to michigan. pray the snow storm in the midwest doesn't kill me. i'm driving right through it in the early morning hours :( but at least when i arrive, there will be hot mashed potatoes and a big turkey awaiting :)

happy thanksgiving!

classic. on saturday, the day i turned 27... joe and i attended the taping of a high school adademic quiz show that his cousin was a contestant in. we arrived a little early, and when we asked where we needed to go, the security guard told me that the contestants could wait in the cafeteria, and my dad could go wait down the hall. doh. i felt so bad... i'm used to being mistaken for a high schooler... but poor joe... i don't think he was used to being called someone's dad :) i wonder how old i will have to be before people start to think i look older than high school. :) at least when i'm 40, people will still be carding me! :)

damn... i had this whole post typed out about the birthday weekend, and of course it got deleted before i could save it. it was a fantastic weekend... i woke up to homemade blueberry muffins... joe baked me my favorite for breakfast :) he then surprised me with a birthday present... i couldn't believe it! that, in addition to two running shirts and an armband (so i can run with it)... he knew exactly what i was wishing for :) we met up with my friends later on, at my favorite ethiopian restuarant. however, it was just my luck, and when we arrived, discovered that the place had caught fire earlier that week, and had closed down! however, the ethiopian restaurant across the street managed to squeeze all eight of us in, so we enjoyed a great dinner despite the change in location. we then played a couple rounds of pool, and then headed off to go dancing :) it was a great time, and we ended the night at "the diner" in adam's morgan. after a while, the alcohol, warm restaurant, and full stomach started to kick in, and i could feel myself nodding off. so we called it a night, and taxi'd home.

today was pretty relaxing... joe and i went up to union station for lunch and to window shop. we then decided to go down to eastern market for some ice cream, and wandered around the booths while we ate our cones. we came across a furniture booth, and he spotted a great piece! it's a bookshelf with a row of drawers... it really fits in and helps with our storage problem:

so for a little over a hundred dollars, we got a great deal. it's our first piece of "joint" furniture :)

now i'm just getting ready to head back to michigan. i've got a three day work week, and then i'm making the drive early thursday morning to make it home in time for dinner :) it will be good to see friends and family... little allie has to be huge by now! i can't wait to take photos and catch up with everyone. i wish i had longer to stay, but i'll be back in a month for christmas :)

in talking about finances earlier, i ran across this article on the washington post today:

Debunking Cosby

and i really enjoyed it. it mostly discusses the stereotypes of poor black families... and even though i'm not poor or black, i agreed with the moderators (michelle and michael) on their viewpoints. hearing the people argue against them reminds me of some of my own friends and their negative opinions... and saddens me to know that stereotypes and racist remarks still exist and are tolerated widely.

anyway, i'd like to get a copy of the book they are discussing... it sounds like an interesting read. :)

what happened to my free time? i remember a year ago... coming home from work and taking lily outside as the highlight of the day. back in illinois, i was no where near as involved as i am out here. hell, on sundays, i used to go to the gas station just to get out of the house and see people :) and yes, it was a year ago today that i made the move. so hard to believe! so, SO much has happened, that i'm excited to see where the next year will take me. i know for one thing, i most likely won't have the same last name ;) nothing official... but all i know is that "plans" are set. but aside from that, next year will be an interesting one. joe and i have discussed buying a place... but that looks like it might have to hold off for at least a year, while we get our finances situated. his car is about to be retired, so payments for that, plus we'd like to take a trip somewhere overseas, like prague or bavaria... or even to egypt! i've never been to a place that required a passport... but joe has been to europe (he played for france's basketball team for a short while) and loves to travel. so once we figure out where we stand and talk to a financial planner, we will have a better idea of when we can afford to go, and when we should look at owning our own place. where we live now is super affordable, so i'm hoping we can stay there for as long as we need to. $995/month for a one bedroom on capitol hill is insane! normally places like ours will go for upwards of $1500/month. especially so close to a metro station. so we're going to enjoy it until we save or decide it's time to move on.

in the meantime, there's so much to do around here still... i still haven't been to any smithsonians yet. or the monument (in my defense, it was closed until recently)... but at any rate... i could wear myself out just doing the things around town :) i love this city. :)

two more days and then it's celebration time. yum! :)

aaahhh... i spent all day yesterday cleaning and organizing... and finally... everything is in order. i really went to town on the apartment... scrubbed the floors, got rid of all the mildew spots in the shower, and put everything away that had been lying around. between the moves, i'd been just dropping boxes of stuff everywhere... saying that i'd get around to finding places for everything to go. well, i finally finished it all... and i feel great. it was so nice to wake up this morning and have a place for everything... and see everything so shiny :) i'm a pretty neat person... and so keeping our apartment clean is a pretty big priority for me. surprisingly, joe is also really neat, especially for a guy (no offense, guys) :) so i didn't have to work too hard... most of my effort went into organizing everything in such a tight space.

but now i can relax this week... no big plans and joe comes home today from phoenix. which is good, cause i missed the lad :) getting ready to celebrate my birthday with some ethiopian food, pool playing, and dancing this saturday... hopefully everyone has a good time!

still no dc license... gotta work on that this week, at the very least. the license plates will have to wait until i get back from michigan. unless i can squeeze it in early next week. but with the holiday thursday, it's not likely. so we'll see...

and i'm down to one home :) i turned in the keys... i'm officially out of the arlington apartment! it was kinda sad... i always get sappy when i leave old places. this one was my big place... a great apartment that i found on my own, i made a few friends in my complex, and it was the first place i was in that really felt "right". it could have been my happiness on moving out to dc... but that apartment was my favorite so far. i will miss it... but i'm looking forward to my new home in dc, and all that it entails :)

i took a few photos of the street and our new place. the animals were being cute, so they're in some, too... i cracked up when i looked at the living room photo. i didn't realize lily was in the photo until i blew it up on the screen. silly dog :) ok, off to get ready for the basketball game tonight. should be fun, and then relaxing tomorrow!

oy. so this should be an interesting tax season coming up. don't know why i'm thinking about this now... it's still many months away. however, i really have no idea how this works. i was working in virginia, and living in virginia. however, now i have moved to the district... so where do i pay taxes?? i know dc residents are still required to pay income tax... but does that mean i don't have to pay in virginia? or i pay both? it's even more confusing since dc isn't a real state... or a city even. it's a 'district'... but we don't have representatives in government, and we're still taxed (hence the license plates that say 'taxation without representation' all over). hmmmm... gonna have to hire a professional this year... and pray i don't owe a billion dollars in taxes. yuck.

looking forward to the weekend. i'm in a bad mood this morning... found a huge bleached mark on the sleeve of one of my favorite work shirts :( i think i did it myself when i used bleach to clean up after lily, and in the bathroom one day. gotta be more careful with that stuff :( i'm also in girly pain and can't find the ibuprofen. oy... gonna be a long day...

thanks to noelle for this link. it's neat... email yourself and it will get sent in 1,3,5,10 or 20 years from now (hopefully). i signed up for the five year... hopefully i'll still have the same email by then. i've had it since 98... so if it can last 7 years, why not another 5 more? :)

email time capsule

in other news, i have officially brought all my things over, and have put the last boxes into storage. i'm having a garage sale over the next few days, to get rid of whatever i have left in the old place, and cleaning. saturday, they keys are being turned in. 4 more days! i officially got word yesterday (finally) that i was approved for the new place, so i can now sign the lease. i can also now go get my dc driver's license. phew... things are getting done and calming down. there's quite a buzz going on at work... my boss put in his resignation, so if you are a systems analyst, i have a job opening for you :) so that has work mighty busy... just in time for the holidays.

speaking of which, two more weeks, and i'll be michigan bound! i'm waking up at 2am thursday morning and driving. last time, i left wed night after work and it was a madhouse. i wound up awake at 2am anyway, only i had been up since 6am to go to work that day. so going to bed early wed and waking up thurs should be much, much better, and get me in just in time to eat :)

cleaning this weekend, and going to a basketball game with friends. should be a lot of fun! i'm just glad i have friday off :) woohoo for three day weekends!

what a fun weekend. not nearly long enough... by the time we got in at 12:30am friday night, we were ready to pass out in our hotel room. but we were up bright and early saturday morning for the wedding. met my parents downstairs for breakfast, and then made our way to the riviera on long island... it was GORGEOUS! it was picture perfect... the wedding took place in a gazebo on the water, then was followed by a cocktail/appetizer hour (which had so much food, my mom thought it was the wedding dinner). we then went inside and had a wonderful five course dinner... complete with dessert sundae bar and a chocolate fountain. yum! i got to dance with joe and we hung out with my parents most of the evening. it was a beautiful day... sunny and in the high 60's... they really couldn't have asked for a better day for a november wedding. i took about 50 photos... i'll post them online later tonight. we then made our way back to dc sunday morning... but we had to detour a bit, since they closed the verazzano for the nyc marathon runners. but we still made good time, and took the rest of sunday to relax. fun fun :)

this week is a busy one. i've got to take the final boxes to storage, and then start pricing everything in my place for the mini garage sale. There's nothing there over $30... most of it is just vases, dishes, decorations, and random furniture (an end table, chair, desk) that i just won't ever use. so rather than storing it, i'm trying to get rid of it all. whatever i can't sell, i'm donating to goodwill. but it all has to be out by this weekend. then saturday and sunday i can clean, and turn in the keys. no more arlington apartment! the holidays are creeping up... but everything is starting to calm down. i can't wait until i have all my stuff consolidated. i have submitted my forwarding address.. so as far as the postal service is concerned, i no longer live there :)

oh, and as for the domain hiccup... i forgot to renew carrie.cc, and it expired on me. i'm lucky no one snatched it up... not that it's in huge demand or anything... but weirder things have happened. but it's back, and good for another year. i had tossed around ideas of just ditching it all together and getting a new one... but just decided to limit myself on this one, instead. i'm aching to do a redesign... but i honestly just don't have the time at the moment. anyway, wedding photos soon...

it's interesting to hear people's opinions on couples, and the question of whether to get a joint bank account or keep seperate ones. the financial advisor columnist who writes for the washington post has very strong opinions about couples getting one account. in her opinion, your money is no longer your money when you get married. it becomes 'our' money... so what's the purpose of two accounts? i happen to agree with her. plus it makes it very easy to pay bills and grocery shop, etc. when the money is being funnelled out of one place. communication has to be there, to make sure no one is paying the same bill twice, or making sure funds are availabe when you both are writing checks. but that should be there anyway. even if only one person is responsible for bill payments and the household budget... the money still should be shared. luckily, joe feels the same way i do :) i've prepared him for my debt obligations... but he's not dissuaded. he realizes i've made mistakes in my past, but that i've learned from them and he's ready to help me recover. 'my' debt will unfortunately become 'our' debt... but regardless if we had two accounts, it would have been an issue. so we're getting ready to plan for the future... and talking of possibly buying a home within two years. that will be interesting. but for now, we're concentrating on making things work in our little home, and saving as much as possible til that time comes. but the fact that we are talking about the future makes me so, so happy... *sigh* :)

off to new york tonight... no updates til next week! have a great weekend everyone!

man, i feel like there are never enough hours in the day. work is crazy... and then when i get home, i still have a bajillion things to do. tomorrow i leave for new york... still need to get everything ready for that. luckily i have time after work to do it, before joe gets done. then we're driving for 5-6 hours... hopefully we'll get there by midnight, or we'll be super tired for the wedding. but i'm excited :) i'm usually the one out on the dance floor, trying to get everyone else to join in :) free booze and good food, then dancing... how can you have a better night?

joe leaves for arizona next weekend to visit his brother, and i'll have the place to myself. it will be odd... i've never stayed there when he wasn't. at least i have a three day weekend for veteran's day. fun fun. i've started christmas shopping... i'm a mostly-online shopper... so i start early to make sure things get shipped on time. i've already picked out joe's and my sister's... everyone else i'm still thinking :)

so address has been officially changed... now i just need to sign the lease, and get my new license, new plates, and i'll be set. then i can start to work on the repairs my car desperately needs. i need new brakes and new tires... nothing drastic, but over the next two months, those are becoming high priority. then a good cleaning is in order... followed by a dentist visit, a dr. visit, and other things that i should have done this year that i let slip by. add it to the list...

the new place is really starting to feel like home. work has me a little stressed... we've gotten a ton of little stuff that seems to keep piling up and getting out of control. but coming home, i feel the day's stresses melt away... and even if i come home to a sink full of dishes, and a hamper full of clothes... it still feels wonderful to be here. i'm sure it will wear off... but for now, i'm enjoying it. i can come home and just hang out... and i finally start to feel like this is my place :) it was hard, moving in with joe... i still felt like a visitor most of the time. but now that all my things are here... i can find what i need, and find a space for everything... i'm really enjoying it :)

this weekend is the trip to new york. just gave the keys to the petsitter, and lily has a fun weekend in store :) then i have the place to myself for a 3 day weekend (veteran's day is a holiday for me!)... just enough time for me to clean my old place and turn in the keys! yay! pretty soon i'll be on the road to michigan for thanksgiving... and can start to loosen my finance belt. sharing rent makes my life easier... much, much easier. the holidays should actually be fun, instead of a stressful time, trying to figure out how to afford to get everyone the things i know they'd love.

so i'm just going to try to get through the rest of the week, and enjoy weddings like i always do! :)
